ok i am going to admit that texturing is not my best skill.... i have actually been using lots of grafient layers and weight maps when texturing, but this techniques is less than precise, so....

i am trying to figure out those incredibly elusive uv maps, since they SEEM to offer great control. i have been struggling with this long enough, now i ask you to help.

what is the !@#$% secret to getting uv maps to layer. for instance if i want to make seperate maps for a nose, lips, and under it all a face layer what do i do? I have used alpha maps, and am sure i have done something wrong in there creation since i always get sort of strange outlines of the uv edge itself. is this a problem with the uv creation, or rthe alpha map??

I have read all sorts of tutorials (including the Leigh's  ) and still uv's are giving me problems. any advise??

Yeah, layering UVs is a bit of a pain. In fact, I never even do it. I just assign different surfaces for the different UV areas.

But do not despair! Here is an answer to your problems!! (http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=34825&highlight=layering) :D

Leigh, what do you prefer? UV maps or making whole the texture yourself with bumpmaps, weightmaps and gradients etc.?

what did you use for that 1337 moria orc?

oh Leigh!! you are truly an amazing wealth of knowledge! that did the trick, now i can concentrate on the actual texture maps and not the uv technique. thanks again for unraveling this mystery for me. literally been trying to figure this out for months... and i would have NEVER tried doing this!

Rabid pitbull - good to hear that it's all working! That is indeed a handy little technique :D:D

Dreamwave - I'm a big user of UV maps myself, and I like to paint all my image maps by hand as much as I can.
If you want to see how I made my orc - look here (http://leigh.cgcommunity.com/making_of.htm) ;) :)
