View Full Version : Dinosaur leg
Vilperi 07-13-2006, 12:12 PM I need some help rigging my T-Rex's legs. I've come up with this point helper and IK chain mess and I've totally lost track with them. I have no idea which one should be linked to which. The toes should be able to go down and splay. Is there any easier way than this? Thanks for any help!

Well, what I did on my dino legs was rig the leg as you normally would (except if you have access to a quad leg set up, use that so it acts as a quadruped's hind leg with a high ankle). Then, I used sliders for all the toe action. Sliders for the toes to splay and sliders for the toes to go down.
I have since made these manual, but I also had a set up where when I lifted the foot the toes would automatically come together and point down, then as I moved the foot back down, they would go up and splay.
I'm no rigger, but I hope that helps.

Thanks bobzilla. I somehow managed to get the middle toe working. Now I just have to link the outer and the inner toe nicely, so that they aren't just hanging on numb.
I have no idea how to do that properly so here's a MAX file if someone could check it out and give me some advice. The red point helpers are for splay, all the green ones in the middle toe are for foot roll and the blue circles are for the toes to go down. I hope someone has the time to check it out. Thanks!

Well, I work in Cinema4D, so I can't help with the Max file, but here's basical;ly the way I approached it.
I made Set Driven Keys for each toe for bending down, then a master to control all of them. Same thing with toe splay. Then connected sliders to each, one for the toes down and one for the toes splayed. Actually, toes splayed is the default position, they really are set to go in.
Hope my explanation didn't make things worse!

Dont realy know what you mean with set driven keys and all that cause I'm a MAX user :)However I appreciate your help a lot!
Seems like people aren't so keen on helping since nobody has viewed the file. Maybe I'll just try to figure it out by my self and stop being such a lazyass.:)

No problem! I had the same problems starting out and lots of nice folks on here have helped me out so any chance I can actually contribute, I do.
Well, Maya and Cinema4D have a function called Set Drive and Set Driver. In Cinema 4D (and I imagine Mya) you pick, say, the first toe bone, select the P rotation, then shoose Set Driver. Then choose the next bone in that chain (on the same toe), select the P rotation, then select Set Driven. Do that with the remaining bones on that chain.
Now, when you rotate the first bone in that chain, then others follow. You can set up all the toes the same way. Then set up User Data Sliders to control them.
Hope that makes some sense. You also might be able to set up some type of expression in Max for that.
Unfortunately, I know nothing about Max!
