"Even as it basks in the box office glory of "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest," Disney is using the opportunity to tighten its belt.

The Mouse House will announce within the next 10 days that it's cutting back on the number of films it makes to around eight per year -- it currently releases around 18 -- and will substantially reduce its workforce. All movies will be Disney-branded, meaning companies like Touchstone could be vastly diminished.
The cutbacks will be far greater than many anticipated, as Walt Disney Studios chairman Dick Cook looks to reinvent the architecture of his studio. Move reflects an effort to improve the studio's return on investment and get infrastructure back into line."

OMG you gave me a heart attack. THought you ment pix as in Pixar not Pictures or Movies. I'd change the title...lol

In any case I wouldn't mind them focusing on making fewer better movies

I think this is a good thing. Disneys it seemed in the past were more focused mainly on quantity rather the quality. I have a feeling some of the wizards from Pixar have had a bit of influence on Disneys future endevours. And its good, I am happy that Disney has come to this realization, because I miss the Disney of old, hopefully the outcome will be great new animations that will eventualy become recognised as classics.

If this means they can stop making the 10 sucky ones and keep making the 8 decent to excellent films, I'm all for it. Thing is no one sets out to make bad films, it just turns out that way. On the other hand, maybe it means they will be making less in-studio movies and moving into distributing more non-studio films like they did with Valiant and The Wild.

With John Lasseter taking a bigger role in the company, I get the impression they are trying to reclaim the Disney 'magic' somewhat. They're phasing out the happy meal, they got rid of a lot of upper executives and I assume they are trying to shed some of the crass comercialism that had became associated with the company(endless remakes and unneccesary sequels). So I'm assuming the emphasis will in fact be on quality rather than quantity.

Hopefully it works out for them, and I also hope, as Lasseter has indicated in an interview, that there will be a place for traditional animation in their future.
