View Full Version : Video Tutorial Codec Poll

Ok guys and galls...

I need some input about codecs for my video tutorials.

Option 1: DIVX

Lesser quality, larger files(Bad for me)(Maybe bad for you)

Option 2: Tecsmith screen capture codec

Better quality(allowing you to see the parameters better)

Smaller Files(good for me...and you!)

I need your input. Option 2, you'd have to DL the codec to watch the movie(though I can make it an .exe that unpacks both the movie and the codec), or Option 1, you probably already have the codec, so no other DL but the movie.

What do you think?

DEF option 2 . . . divx kinda blows for video tuts.
it doesn't hold up when scrubbing.

Yeah, I totally agree.

I'm just not 100% sure everyone will DL the codec to watch them...Of course, I am flipping the bill for the hosting, as well as all my time, so I'm hoping that people will take the 10secs to load the codec...

But then...

Well...If they don't like it, they don't have to DL it.

Yeah...There...how's that!?

Option 2, because file size is a problem for me too.
Larger => Worse

I'd have no problem downloading the codec, as long as it's easier to get working than Divx was for me and readily available. There's nothing wrong with being smaller and better quality.

Honestly, I've never heard of the Tecsmith codec, but then again, I'm a n00b so there's a lot of stuff I don't know. :)

Better Quality and Smaller File size, how can it not be Tecsmith.

hmm, I may have missed something but for me all the tecsmith codec videos I have seen have been much larger then a divx encoded one.

For proof just look at the 3dbuzz videos which are all divx and are very small files considering the amount of video, time and audio.

Yes the divx files can be a little fuzzy compared to the tecsmith ones, but you can still clearly see what is going on.

Or is it that all the tecsmith ones I have seen have been poorly encoded?

Techsmith is really much smaller than DIVX. It's possible that you are refering to the older techsmith codec.

In my initial testing, the techsmith codec wins hands down. It's smaller and a vitually loss-less format.

We shall see. Once everything is done, I'll pick the one that is smaller. Period.

Thanks for the feedback!

ahh, ok so we are not talking about the screen capture codec then, or are we.

Still, yeah what ever is smaller with as good or better quality and the codec is an easy free download, then thats cool.

Techsmith, but make sure to link to their site. Not everybody knows about it. Takes a second to install, so I don't see any problems there.

I'll make sure that the codec is available and works well. I have an option with camtasia to pack the video and codec into an .exe file, but I figured that what with viruses what they are today, I'm guessing people would not want to open an .exe.

Thanks for the responses, guys!

If the codec does'nt work out as planned, I can always recompress it with divx...

And now...to begin creating the videos...after some much needed sleep.
