Anyone have a quick way to create realistic blowing sand? I'm working on a project that requires blowing sand within a desert scene. I've tried using particles system in the 3d app. i'm using, but my computer system takes a cpu whacking when trying to create such a thing.

I figured that post-effect blowing sand would be better. Is this something that AE can do? Any tuts? suggestions?

Thanks!

If you can post a screen shot of what you intend to composite the sand against... that would help the rest of us with a response.

In the while... I'd say particle playground in AE might be one solution.... although you'd still experience a render hit of some sort.

MI3,

Similar to this: http://video.google.com/videoplay?d...&q=blowing+sand

I don't need the particles to actually bounce of objects, rather a hazy flow of sand to be used to create a dusty desert scene.

Thanks!

Based off of the videos I saw from your link, I'd suggest the following:

1) Particle Playground with a touch of blur (Render Intensive)

or

2) Fractal Noise with a touch of blur (Render Intensive).

or

3) combination of 1+2 above (ditto)

Check out creative cow's website for tuts on both. You'll need to combine eaither techniques with various animated masks to get the look you want. Also, you'll have to match the lighting of your background plate with eiter blend modes or by including a light in AE (warning: 3d Particles with a light in AE are very render intensive).

As M|3 alreasy said, use Particle playground for best effects.

This is a response I gave to a similar request - I thought it might help you too:

The only preset for dust or sand that I could find were these:

http://www.trapcode-people.net/file...s.php?fileid=82 (http://www.trapcode-people.net/filedetails.php?fileid=82)

http://www.trapcode-people.net/file...s.php?fileid=69 (http://www.trapcode-people.net/filedetails.php?fileid=69)

http://www.trapcode-people.net/file...s.php?fileid=76 (http://www.trapcode-people.net/filedetails.php?fileid=76)

You could modify either of these and maybe but more velocity, and particles etc...

3DMax has an excellent particle system though and would be a better program to create a realistic sandstorm. However, AfterEffects and Particular are able to create some wicked results. I hope these help....
