No, it's a bug. Call PNY (I've talked to Mike) and file a bug report.

http://www.pny.com/quadro/support/contact.cfm

If they say maxtreme is not supposed to support max 5 refer them to these release notes:
ftp://download.nvidia.com/ws_apps/MAXtreme/4.00.26/MAXtreme_4.00.26_Release_Notes.pdf
available from
http://www.nvidia.com/view.asp?IO=maxtreme_4.00.26

Also refer to the following discussion for Nvidia contact information: here (http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=35815&perpage=15&pagenumber=4)

Here's a list of the bugs I filed:

1. 3ds max 5 crashes after attempting to open sample files installed with max, such as biplane.max. This error does not happen on a custom built 1800+ using an A7V333 board and a Compaq Quadro4 750 XGL. ("An error has occured and the applicaton will now close. ...")

2. In editable poly the vertices are invisible on the subobject level.
Selected edges are not highlited red with soft selection on. Many of our classes deal with poly modelling and it's impossible to use Maxtreme with this bug.

3. Rotate gizmo does not have the radial axis highlited om mouseover,
making it difficult to grab.

4. Spline objects in perspective viewport are only displayed in color when viewed from certain angles. Create a spline circle on a ground plane and arc-rotate perspective viewport to see the other side of it. It looks black. Colored spline objects are often used as helpers in character animation

File a report. They have a special form for it. I talked to Nvidia, talked to Boxx and eventually PNY seems like the only place where you can formally submit a bug. More people submit - sooner they fix it IMHO.

A valid point. Without Maxtreme Quadro performance is on par with gaming cards and is not anywhere near the performance level of the competitors' pro cards in the same price range.
