In Hidden Line Removal mode: Can I make objects display in any other color than grey?

Switch to the palette toolbar (lower left, looks like... a palette) then click a color, then your object.

That only seems to change the color of the wireframe. I want the object color to change.

In the display options ppg set "Hidden Line Surface Color" to "Object Diffuse Color".
