View Full Version : Races of Middle Earth - character - Dargon
Dargon 01-17-2003, 02:54 PM Hey all,
I'm new to this whole CGTalk thing, thought I'd give a whirl with this contest...
I have a concept sketch done, I just need to get my dirty little hands on a scanner, and I'll put it up.
My concept is this:
Since this is a "what-if" type of project, I'm going with "What if Sauron won?"
So, given that premise, he enslaves the people of middle earth, including the hobbits. He puts the hobbits to work in his mines and factories, where their diminutive size can be utilized properly. Unfortunately, their bodies are relatively weak, and they break easily under the pressures of digging with their hands, hauling materials, etc.
In order to combat their weaknesses, but build on their strengths, Sauron changes their breed, mixing them with Trolls and Orcs, keeping their shrunken state, but adding in strong skin, bones, and an unusual sense of strength.
Over time, their intelligence and self will would be bred out, so they become much more subservient, and willing to die for their masters.
In order to add strength to their small hands, the index and middle fing would thicken, with the ring and pinky fingers merging into one thicker finger. (still with 2 fingernails and 2 bones inside)
So that's the concept, but I need a name. Any suggestions?

Worked on some facial details, tightened some details - aways to go yet, but it's coming along.
I don't have too much time to work on it, just a little at the end of each workday - hope I get it done on time!
This is at about 4.5 hours so far.

That's a great concept, and the model is looking very cool so far as well!
The model actually reminds me quite a bit of the Mudokans from Abe's Oddysee - which is pretty perfect, since they were also a repressed enslaved race. Nice stuff

Glad you guys like it!
I've been working on concept lately - I've decided to name the race the Skabbits.
The Skabbits work mainly in a slave labour kinda capacity, mostly in mines and the great machinery of Mordor's factories.
Occasionally, Mordor requires them for battle, their short stature comes in handy, as they come together into a tight mass of blades and spears. They may die in droves, but they can fit more bodies, more arms, more swords into a tighter space, thus allowing them to pull down a surprising amount of enemy casualties.
But back at home, out of war, they still cling to some of the things they had when they were Hobbits. They love their pipes, and make their homes in round caves with round support beams, and, if they are lucky, round windows. They love their food, and still partake in quite a bit of it, but the usual fare these days is usually stale raw flesh off the bone - cast offs from the stronger races of Mordor. But of course, add some nice tatties, and mushrooms, and maybe you have a decent meal!
So, to reflect this, I am straying slightly from my concept art.(gasp!)
Instead of the small amount of armour, and the sword at his side, he will be laden down with tools. Leather straps will criss-cross his body, holding on the various items that he would need in a typical day.
Of course, this does include a big, freaking knife for cutting food, rope, and the neck of any little rival who tries to take what's his!
I should get another chance to work on the model tonight, I'll post here if there is anything to show...
Cheers

Skabbits instead of Gabbits from Munch huh,and your character could be Abes Brother, you like Oddworld don't you,so do I.:shame: ;)
None the less it looks to be a good idea and pretty good work so far.:applause:

They were called Gabbits?
I do like the art of the game, but never really played it.
I was namaing them Skabbits as a term to link them with Hobbits, but meaner - I wonder if the designers of Oddworld also had Hobbits in mind when designing their characters' names?
At any rate, my character should look a fair amount different from theirs by the time he is done...
...perhaps a different name tho, I want this character to fit with the mythology of the LOTR, not any other mythology.

Done some subtle work in the last little while, mostly adding detail.
Did, however, adjust his proportions slightly, to make him a little more realistic, a little less Oddworld. Hopefully, once I've started the texturing cycle, he should not look like abe, but more like a mutated Hobbit...

nice update dargon!!...I like this guys head alot and the body is coming along very well!!...have you plans for clothing or accessories?

A few plans Fetus-
The straps across his chest are to hold on a simple piece of leather armour. Leather straps on his arms, used to help him latch on to mining carts to ease the pressure on his hands. They'll have cloth underneath to stop the leather from rubbing his arms raw. Torn pants, bandages and braces should round out the look. His feet will stay unclothed, because he was a Hobbit. I was thinking about the idea of some sort of hat - just to visually pull him away from the Oddworld look.

From your description about the character u have a lot of detail to put on him..
If i may suggest , when it come to the eyes texturing ...take a look to Fellah's eyes...the same look if achieved will be great in your character...:wavey:
