View Full Version : How to change mouse behaviour
thinsoldier 07-11-2006, 01:06 PM My middle mouse button/scrollwheel just fell out. How/where in maya do I change the mouse behavior to pan the camera using something like alt+shift+LMB?

Be sure your mouse settings point the Middle button to Middle click, in the config panel of the mouse, with logitech mouse it works like this anyway

ok, maybe i'm not being clear enough or you're not being clear enough?
Let me try again ;)
OK. I 'm literally missing the physical scroll wheel/button in the middle of my mouse. I'm literally operating on only 2 buttons here. And even if I had a proper middle mouse button, my wrist and middle finger would sing praises from the mountain tops if I could pan the camera in the viewport using alt+shift+LMB or any other key combination, so long as I dont have to touch a middle mouse button ever again for something as frequent as panning the camera.
Seriously for months before the scroll wheel fell out I've been having to press with like 8x the force to get any response from that button. My wrist and fingers are a wreck. Even after buying a new mouse I'd still greatly appreciate being able to pan the camera using just a keyboard modifier and the left mouse button.

btw, logitech mouseware is poop. No version of it has been able to properly detect the total numer of buttons on my mx-laser.

Hey Guys,
I use a Logitech MX laser and find it works just great.
If you dont like the Logitech software, I would recommend a great little utility called USB Overdrive, which will take care of mapping out ALL of the buttons just as you like. Try it.

There is a shelf button that will let you enter panning mode. It's the 5th shelf button from the left in the general tab. Click it once and you'll be able to pan using the LMB alone.
Also, you can engage the tool as a hotkey. Window>Settings/Preferences>Navigation>TrackTool
Assign it to whatever you like.
Finally, you can set it up as a keyboard/mouse combo by creating your own MEL script. You'll need to create two commands, one on press and one on release.

I had the same problem, I hated my middle mouse button on Logitech MX1000, it was too hard and made a stupid click sound.
It is not a mouse but I can recommend a Wacom tablet. Alt+move wacom to rotate, Alt+press bottom bottom to pan. You don't have to move your fingers all the time.
Well, you can setup the pan tool to z or something.... so you can use left mouse.
