View Full Version : Forward Leg in Contact Pose
Amit_S 07-11-2006, 07:31 AM Hye! I`ve just started doing animation. I have some doubts regarding the
contact position. According to Ani Survival Kit and also sme other tuts I`ve seen
the forward leg must be straight and not bent.
So this is how it`ll be, right?

But I think that if I bed the forward leg just a little it looks more natural.
Thats the pose in the Muybridge Human Fig in Motion book.
So what do u think I`m doing wrong here?

what I like to do when animating in 24fps is to have the leg straight before contact, straight again for contact then bent for the next frame. Having the leg straight for at least 2 frames will allow you to avoid knee pops.

"the leg straight before contact, straight again for contact then bent for the next frame." Straight for 2 poses? Thats what I would do. But rather than straight for th contact pose I just might bend it a wee little bit. I`ll try out our stuff. Thanks for posting.
By the way I also had another Q regarding the Walk Cycle- "
Survival Kit Walk Cycle Q "
It was kindda looking too cartoony.
But LucentDreams replied back saying:"2D also has to be more subtle to avoid a cartoony look. everythign in the Survival kit is mroe extreme and designed for being obvious at explaining what they do, subtle woudl be hard ot follow. he concepts are all the same, just be subtler."
So I guess maybe tweaking the rules just a little will actually help. Thnx again.

Animation is an interpretation of reality, a way of concentrating/ distilling reality to add extra power and poignancy, this is why the front leg is straight on contact, it has the maximum contrast with the bent leg that follows.
