View Full Version : scaling several faces at once, each acting on its own pivot

One of those little things Max does with no trouble that I'm really missing in Maya is the ability to affect multiple faces at the same time but all on their own normals. Say I've got a group of faces selected and I want to scale them all on their own x axis based on each individual face's normal. I can't just scale cause that scales to the pivot of the entire selection. Basically its the same thing that happens when you extrude but I just want to apply that tool to something I already have selected... without extruding it.

I've asked around the office and nobody has any idea so any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks
CTM

This is very easy in Maya.
Select the faces and choose Edit Polygons > Move Component

that doesn't do what I want at all actually. that brings up the move vertex option and although it DOES allow me to move the vertices out based on their normal but this gives me scaling issues I don't want. it seems the "move component" will only move vertices for some reason. Unless I'm missing something.

Works without any problems here on faces and exactly as you requested.
Do you know how to use the manipulator?

I thought I did but apparently I'm missing something

I grab a couple faces apply the move component and it just switches to vertex mode without saving my selection

Is this what you want to do?
I selected the faces then chose Move Component.

Make sure that the component selection mode is on, on the status bar (the button circled in green)

If the object selection mode is on (the button in the red circle) when you apply Move Component command you will get the error.

When you choose faces from the marking menu by right clicking on an object it puts only that object in component selection mask but not the rest of the scene.
To change the component selection mode of the whole scene make sure that the component mask button (the green) is pressed.
F9, to F12 switches the whole scene to that mode.

They've really got to fix that.. It's been like that for as long as I can remember

ah yes now I see, thx. Although this tool is still kinda sucky, I used it on some faces of a sphere and Maya doesn't seem to do a good job of aligning the tool logically it just seems kinda random which way x and y face.

Guess its just one of those things I'll have to miss from Max.

With the situation shown on your screenshot, open the Attribute Editor (Ctrl + a), go to the polyMoveFace# tab and in the Poly Move Face History section, change the values for Local Direction.

To change values interactively in the Attribute Editor, hold Ctrl and drag left or right in the input boxes. Use the Left, Middle, and Right mouse buttons for different speed.
