Finally it's done. I'd like to thank everyone who participated in this challenge, shared their ideas and who helped me by commenting my wip. Good luck to you all for the next step.

Here are the concept sketches I did for this challenge:

And here is my Final Image: Atlantis - Hidden Civilisation

The idea is, that Atlantis was hidden for a long time within a huge closed cave. The outside of this cave was already explored, but then a little eruption, caused by a nearby vulcano (thats why I wanted to bring in the lava at the beginning), broke the cave's ceiling and Atlantis was discovered.

Thank you, Matt.

Here's a little update:
http://www.marcobauriedel.com/cgtalk/ATLANTIS_03.jpg
I'm not happy with the towers positions. I'll render new versions to position them more like in the sketch. I also hope, painting details will help to make them look more realistic.

those lights.. a bit too christmas tree-like. Try having less of them, and some of them more dim?

you are right and I'll definately add variation. thanx

I think I'll completely throw out the tower-idea ... it doesn't fit ... what do you think ?

Here are the two light scenarios I'm thinking about:

hey Inlakechh the second one is definitly one of my favorites of all the entries , the concept is great and this can turn in a great matte painting, I see a lot of potential in this one , good luck

Hey, nice sketches. I tend to prefer the second sketch, because the first one contains slightly too much light source to my personal liking and I got confused, from the focus point of view (perhaps lowering the lightning intensity of the lava might help?). The lava idea is neat and creative, though.

Keep up!

Thanx for the comment Moysh.

I lost way too much time trying to get the Lava work. It just didn't work.
So this is the very rough direction I'll take it. Maybe I'll add lights to the city; dunno yet.
I need to put in some more color variation.

Honestly, I like the direction you were going with the original piece. There is so many options and you could really push it so far! But if you're really not feeling it.... I like the second one down on the left. Gives you a chance to create something really cool with the light sourcing!!
Keep it up! Can't wait to see where you take it!

In my honest opinion you have a good concept going. You should keep working on it because at this stage you probably won't have enough time to put the details that you want and consider the constructive criticisms from your fellow members.
Your concept is one of my favourites right now and it will be unfortunate for you not to finish as I was looking forward for the finished version.

In the end it is your decision abd good luck any way in whatever you choose.

Marco! what are you doing , keep going with your other matte!

hehe nah do what you want but I do really like these new sketches. The middle left one is my fav, but really I think the one you were working on is better than your new sketches. and i would like to see you finish it , even if its after the challenge is over :D

Keep up the great work

Cheers

I really like where this is going about depth ... but it looks less mystical and like a miniature ... how can I solve this ?

thi s is looking cool , I like lighting a lot and mood , but I think some of the architecture look too flat , ( aereal perspective ) you need to show more deep with distance and scale , thi would be just a point, also the foreground rocks are too flat as well try adding more with depth just to blend foreground and middle ground more, I hope I made myself clear

I love the looking through the tunnel aspect. It almost feels like looking out from the belly of a creature. Fun! Good Luck.
