I need a rigged character built solely with 2d sprites which then would have theyr locations locked on a 3d model. The 3d model is not intended to show up in the final animation I just want to use it for controll.

For example to change the facial expression I want to use some kind of controllers, likey those aswell used in 3d models. But instead of change the geometrical topology I'd need to swap the sprites in some way. In order to move an arm, I could rig the arm to behave properly thats not a big deal. But Im having problems with the sprite switching part.

Does anyone have an idea or maybe a hint how such a 2d effect could be achieved?
