Well, hello there. I finally decided to open up a small thread of mine where i can post my wips, sketches and all that random stuff my stylus decides to have me paint. :)

I haven't been painting for too long, well in fact, for some years but it has been very, very hectic and i am finally deciding to be a little more serious about it. Thanks to some friends that pushed me in the back for this to happen. I tend to have too much interests all over the place and have a very short attention span you see. And too many ideas for my own good; i'm the buzzy bee that jumps from this to that constantly... Tons of unfinished pieces sits there waiting to be finished, fearing the O never-ending pile of abandonned (and certainly doomed) work.

Oh and i tend to babble too much for my own good too, i get lost with my own words. You're warned. :D

--------------------------

So here's the first i plan to finish. A very simple portrait of a dark elf (i won't even bother to mention since when this has been sitting on my hardrive). I started her for a project long ago that never really happened but hey, i thought i'd still give her a go.

I did not want to paint the generic dark elf with almost pure white hair and the mean b**** look. Right now, she's still missing some shadows cast form her hair on her face and the strands of hair at the bottom of her back and around her face is still unfinished but i wanted to know if anything else was wrong lighting wise or anatomy wise. Also she's mssing all of her garments right now for i am completely reworking it at the moment, taking a break from her hair and overall skin shading.

I sketched a part of her headpiece (there will be things dangling from it with small stones)which is getting quite tricky for me, i cannot find the right perspective it seems... It is very rough right now but you get the idea of the shape etc.

I'll be updating later on when the sketch of what she'll be wearing on her back will be done.

Thank you for taking a peek! :)

Lovely picture, but arn't her eyes a tad too small? The nose also might need more shading.

Hi Lilie :) In regards to the tiara - it looks off because it is sitting on her head as if she was looking straight ahead - but her head is tilted, so the top of the tiara needs to be tilted, too -- just maybe draw a line from her nose through her forehead and you will see where the point needs to go and move the whole thing accordingly. Though the foreshortening for this orientation looks correct, so you should be able to do the rest just fine. :)

Well well, small, small update. Just a quick sketch i jsut finished out of boredom. She has no hair, eylashes and eyebrows because well.. I usually jsut paint a bald head to get everything in the right place/shape then i add those. Nothing too fancy.. It has tons of mistakes but eh, wasn't anything really serious. :) Might even be considered as some sort of skintone/marking study for a painting i had in mid for a while involving a tribal-like character. I should not have used a white background though.. =>.>= Her lips and eyes are quite small too, now that i look at it... Maybe an influence from watching Memoirs of a Geisha not too long ago?

Anyway, on the technical side, took about 35 minutes on 1 layer with 1 brush.

Concerning the dark elf, i'm not sure if i'll keep working on her. I seem to really, really be stuck on her garments: i can't seem to design something nice for her back and i don't want her to wear a headpiece without anything else, eh? =o.Ô=

Hey Lilie. The first face is beautiful, I love the innocence radiating from the character. There is something slightly off about the face however, and I think it's the jawline. Perhaps if you moved the ear closer to her face and made the jawline shorter, that would help. Also, maybe shaving a little bit off of the far side of her cheek (closer to the mouth) would also help. Otherwise, this is looking lovely. I look forward to seeing more!

I think you're right Steph (can i call you Steph? ;) ). I never really bothered with her ear that much but i think that bringing it closer to the face would really help. I too though her face seemed a little ''wide'', particulary since her features are quite small (i will make her eyes a little bigger as suggested by Calimax. Maybe i'll finish her afterall.. Without giving her any bckornaments as i originally wanted. Ah well, only time will tell.

Thanks for the suggestions, much appreciated. I'll give it a go and see how it looks after. :)

Yay!! at it again! :) Nice start, like the colours. You have about 3 out of nine lives left regarding these paintings *stares intently*. Don't make me harass you for progress!!!

Oh noes, an update! I thought it was about time i'd kick my own b*** and start posting again to improve my skills and stuff... So, here goes a small update on the darkelf of doom.

I'm am so sick of her and i haven't got out of the 'i work 15 minutes on her then stop for weeks, rince and repeat' phase but eh, i decided that i'd just now finish (okay, actually -start-) her headpiece, finish her hair and add some overall detailing and she'd be done. I scrapped the other ideas. She's lacking her lashes right now but i'll add them in the end. I really like how her eyes turned out, was a 15 minutes frenzy last week. I erased part of her face too, she looks a little less chubby but her chin seems a little too protruding or is it just me? And obvisouly, i changed her hairdo and i think it's all for the best thoguh her fringe is only into the initial 'sketch' phase for now. Her headpiece should be about this color and there wil lbe some green gems dangling on the small chains to repeat the color of her eyes. That's it. I'll try to finish her this week before going away for the holidays. :]

And a little something else... 45 minutes sketch i did the other day that i plan on bringing further. I did not decide on the composition yet so it will all change later on.. Will probably make the background some wintery landscape. She will have somewhat short hair (above the shoulders) that is going to be whispy-like (if i'm able to achieve what i have in mind) with big, crystal-like sparkling earrings. I'll see where she'll take me, i'm making sure to not stick too much to my first idea like i usually do, i think that it cripples me more than anything else when i do that. I think her corset isn't aligned correctly with her body or vice versa for now, seems off. :\

Here you go.. I'll try to keep this a little more alive in the future. :] Thanks for taking peek! Feedback and critiques are greatly appreciated.

Even though i'm seeing straw balls rolling around in here (you know, like in bad far west movies. ;p) here's an update on the dark elf. Finally got back to her and i'm motivated to finish her this time.

As far as hair and skin goes, i guess i'm done with them, save for a little texturing and detailing. I'm now working on the headpiece and as you can see, i decided to change it's design, i could not get the other one to work perspective wise to save my life. :[ But i'm having some troubles shading the base, the left part (our left) seems off. Any help would be appreciated and also overall comments and crits to improve her. :] For now i'm leaving the base of the headpiece and will start adding it's other part (pointy stuff, chains, a few gems).

you're picking it up again. that's good. i've always wanted to see you finish this piece. ;)

i think think you should show the forms of the back like the scapula and the recessed line for the spine. also maybe the shape of her right shoulder might be too straight. perhaps you can check yourself in the mirror. what will the new head piece look like? personally... i think that the previous head piece had strong impact. it added a grander feel for the character.

well other than those it's a spanking piece! something i'd love to see in a magazine page or perhaps hanging on my bedroom wall. :applause:

I guess you are right about the back and headpiece. I'm gonna go and take a few reference pictures of myself in a similar position to see how the spine looks and the shoulder. :] As for the headpiece... I admit i really liked the first design too (there wil lbe small chains dangling here and there with small gems attached to them of the same color of her eyes.). I might try to mix both designs together and see how it goes. Maybe today my brain will be a little more cooperative to get the perspective right. :]

Thanks a lot for commenting and giving these suggestions, it is very appreciated. :] I'll post an update later on today.
