Hello, this will be my first matte painting. I plan to use alot of 3d since i don't have a tablet. Below is a quick sketch i did of the city. The center is sort of an acropolis and the city once had a river flowing through it.

here is a quick model of the city I made today. The inner part is mostly from an older project. I decided to reuse it for this project.

Wow, the 3D looks very good. You could had more city rings to it. It would became bigger and more like a metropolis.

Keep up the good work!

Awesome. I'm really liking the model. Can't wait to see more work on this.

Thanks guys! Below is the original idea i've been working on. I decided its too boring. I'm going to add another ring as suggested by RicardoGarces. The idea is that the city continues down but is covered by many layers of mud and sand. I'm working on a lower angled shot that will include some background elements, creating a better composition

this is looking really good, try some elements in the foreground and be careful with the sens of scale this must look huge

Thanks! Here is a major update. The painting is almost complete. I hope it still feels underwater enough. I'm going for a simpler concept so it's believeable. Also, have I given the city enough scale? (note: this is lower quality than actual image)

looks great here, although a bit much contrast, at least on this screen, but it looks good, like the overall look, should work out quite good =)

This is looking very nice :) In my view it does not look like it is underwater but just a blue image ... also the city does not really feel big. You should try to add some elemtens to give it a greater scale. Like a whale swimming around or so ...

I am looking forward to the next update :)

I like how it's going, but I agree with the blue tinted picture comment
I allways thought of the lighting underwater as dappled/indirect
maybe if the surface /sky in the background incorporated this it would appear under the sea
only a thought :)

hey, nice model, but your colors are too saturated.. I would add also more color variation, maybe some green hues as well. Oh and be sure to show more scale too..

I agree with Ranath about the color saturation, perhaps the composition needs more work, I see it too simple, play with foreground elements as well as more interesting background details

thanks for the comments. I re-did the composition with your advice in mind. I filled more of the picture with the city. I also realized that the giant stairwells were killing the scale of the city. I have added another ring and more buildings to help give a better sense of scale. The picture still needs more work so this isn't completely finished.

Here is a slight update. I think the image has a better underwater feel now. I might need to fix some of the background though.

No comments? Anyways, below is another slight update. One problem i realized with doing an underwater matte paitning has to do with the lighting. At a certain depth, light will have been almost completely absorbed or reflected. A wide underwater shot of such a massive structure is not completely realistic or reasonable. If Atlantis was deep enough, the most accurate matte painting of it might be a black screen. I guess it depends on the amount of realism you are going for. Some accuracy has to be sacrificed for a nice looking matte painting however.
I found a site explaining underwater photography and how light works in the water, that might help people having trouble or anyone. The site also has samples of underwater photos:

Good work, but nevertheless I think illumination too bright, on the big depth of such transparency cannot be. Try to add what that light sources recovering a picture. As there are no details of the foreground. Even bubbles, small fishes.... Simply particles of a plankton floating in water. Good luck!

Agree with DiM.

Some textures to the model would help too.

Hi there!I think youd be carfeul with the light I think its a bit saturated. I like the construction so much, and as the people said, youd add more textures. I wish you good luck!

Thanks to all those who gave their advice. Good luck on your entries.

I think i'm finally finished. I've sort of run out of ideas and time to make

it better. Title: Remnants of a Lost Civilization
