I am trying to get back into 3d modelling again but the choices of 3d software are many and its hard to know which to go with. Apart from XSI, the ones I have considered are Lightwave, 3ds max and Maya. XSI seems to be less accessible and has less tutorials.
But my main criteria would be the effectiveness of the package. Since this is an XSI thread I was hoping that someone experienced with XSI would be in the position to shred some light on the features of XSI compared to the other packages I mentioned.

i will not starting comparing softwares here as i know only 3dMAX and XSI, but i can tell u that XSI is well balanced in most of it's tools..maybe in some parts it's weaker or stronger than it's competitors but it offers u many tools to make your job..
it has a strong polygon modeler, (nurbs also seem better in version3), excellent animation tools and one of the best renderers on the market..
it's workflow is one of it's best parts (personal opinion), and as for references there r some great sites around with tutorials ect..
maybe u should try the demo version and judge yourself:)
best regards
george

I did just today download the XSI learning edition. I also have the Maya learning edition and Gmax. I couldnt find a learning edition of Lightwave though. But I guess I'll have fun playing with all of them.

Tha'ts the best thing you can do is use the demos available and see which one you feel comfortable using.

I have been trying out XSI and I cant get the Bevel Tool to work on a polygon mesh cube. When I use I rectangle to select the cube. then go to the modify toolkit and then to Bevel Component thing happens at all.

"e" select the components/edges to bevel then apply bevel
or apply bevel first and then it says "pick" at the cursor promting you to pick/select edges

The link for previous version is on the frontpage of softimage.com, but I guess its painfully obvious that that can't be the question.

Has anyone heard if Avid is releasing a 3.0 demo for XSI?
