View Full Version : Hi res train car
Schoenrock 07-09-2006, 04:02 PM im working on a train car that will go with a locomotive that i will be modeling right after this one is finished. i was hesitant to post my model because i am always afraid of what people will say. im not scared of a good crit, but its people who tear me a new one that makes me kinda weary. any ways, i decided its time to stop being a baby about it and post what i have so far. i would say it between 85% and 90% finished. once the model is considered done its off to the locomotive and then texturing.

What references are you using? What time period? Contemporary? Is it American gauge? The car looks a little wide and short with respect to the track width, but I'd have to see a reference first. You may in fact know a lot more than I do on this subject, as I don't know a great deal.
Also, if you can, you should use true curved surfaces or apply more smoothing to the wheels and other curved surfaces on the trucks.
The detail looks very nice. What locomotive are you going to model?

well, i have a few HO Scale model trains that i am modeling from, so i have them in hand. i dont know too much about names or what ever, but i know its a train that was late WW2 era. the car that you see here is indeed a bit shorter than what the scale model is, as this is supposed to be my own thing but made to look real. as for curved surfaces, i could see using them for the wheels and other parts, i will have to re learn nurbs i guess. also, i have many pics i got from google, as some of the details on the trucks were not all that good, so i had to do a bit of emprov to make it look good. i will see if i can get some pics of the scale models and post them here.

I like all the detail that you have put into the train and hope to see updates soon. Also could you post a wireframe, thanks.
Keep it up

at the moment im rendering 600 frames, so once that is done i will get to the wireframes.

here is some wireframes for ya. i may have to do a second post as the limit is only 3 and i have 4 shots.

nice work. maya yes?
i'd up the poly on the wheels or convert to subd. looks good though.

im going to have to redo the wheels, and actually i found a few pics off of google to go by. im not too keen on sub d's just yet, and i really do not see a reason to use them on hard surfaces.
if there is any other items you see that needs work, please let me know. as i want to start the locomotive as soon as this one is finished.
thanks

EDIT: yes, its maya. im trying to learn max though, but the interface and the controls are kinda goofy compared to maya's.

heres another update.

as you will see, i smoothed out the wheels, and remodeled the middle section.
things i still wish to do are:
1. model holes in the wheels, i have a few pics of real train wheels, so i am going to go by them.
2. add chains, locks, and possibly rope
3. add dents in certain areas
4. this may or may not happen, have not decided yet, but i may model some side doors of some kind.

just a minor update here. the chains are not complete, infact, i think i might change the layout of them. still planning to model a few locks to go with the chains.

Very nice indeed. It is true that the devil is in the details...keep up this level of detail and this will be something fascinating to look at. In actuality it already is.
looks good. nice to see it progress.
edit: is it the maya wire render that's making the geomertry triangles?

Mark!
Looking good! I can see some definite progression from the first stills you sent me a while back. A few things. 1. You added chains, I encourage you to reconsider. 2.The ladder looks like it has too many rungs. 3. Add the doors! 4.Why the tris? Keep it up.

if you could please, list the parts that you see as simple. the scale model i have, the pics i am also going by, they have simple parts. some of them i am almost thinking are too simple to even be real, but they are. ill post my reference pics real quick.
EDIT:
ok, here are some of the reference pics i found off of google before i started this project. when ever i get the chance i will take pics of the scale model i am going by and post them.

the tri's are from the vector renderer. i wanted to use that to show the wireframe, maybe not?

well, i figure at least this is an update. its not a big one, but its on its way for sure. i have started the doors and fixed the chains to my liking. i did not want to get rid of the totally, just yet. i need to add a lot of detail to the doors yet, and i also still need to add some locks and and a few other things before i call this finished.

Very nice. Trains have a special place in my heart. Are you going to build an engine?

yeah actually, i have it started already. at the time i thought i was done modeling the train car, but, i changed my mind after browsing a few topics here on the boards.
heres what i have so far on the locomotive. i have not worked on this in a few months, as i have been pretty busy with other things as well as the train car.

texturing is going to be awhile, as i am modeling a hi res tank right now, but i figured there might be some people that have not seen this, or wanted to see the updates but never had the chance to.
