Title: The Human Condition
Name: Enrico Cerica
Country: Belgium
Software: Blender
This is based on a painting I did several years ago when I was inspired by some surrealist artists like Dali, Max Ernst and mainly by Magritte. No particular symbolic here, it's mainly a composition and graphical work.
Modelled and rendered with Blender using the new nodes interface for compositing.
C&C are of course welcome

Great piece! As a huge fan of Dali and Magritte my first thought was that it resonated of Magritte's influence. And overall I see more Magritte than Dali or Ernst in this piece. And I love the foreground figure - very nice! I also like the rather random approach to naming the piece in relation to what's going on - also very much like Magritte.
Now for the crits. You're getting some odd artifacts/mottling in the shaded area of the figure's head - it's a bit distracting, and if you want to follow the lead of Magritte and Dali I'd smooth that out. The lighting is excellent on the foreground figure, and I feel that it should be continued on the badminton birdies and window frame to a certain degree. As it is they seem to have a light source coming from a different angle than the figure. Their shadows are much lighter and lack the dramatic punch that the figure has. The same applies to the curtain - it's a little too soft in tonality.
I think the starkness of the shadows should be carried to the chess piece-like figures outside as well, and I think a bit thicker haze closer to the horizon would help with the creation of distance in the landscape. If you study some of Dali's paintings he used very contrasting lights and darks between highlights and shadows. His landscapes would also tend to blend between sky and horizon to create the illusion of depth. Magritte's approach to light and dark contrasts was little different: he didn't always use harsh divisions between them and would tend to lean more towards the style of shading that you have on the window frame and even outside the window. But being that your foreground figure is so starkly lit and uses such harsh contrasts in light and dark, and it's the primary focal point/subject of the piece I would expect the rest of the piece to follow suit in shading techniques.
My crits aside: you've done an excellent job in capturing the spirit of the surrealists! :applause:

Nice piece of artwork.
You gave it the "mood" of the surrealists paintings.
Congrats! :)

I love surrealist too and I really like this scene.
This is art not simply 3d. IMHO too many images focused on 3d realism and too less in "emotions and inside".
Very good job
Thanks for sharing

This is great work: digital surrealisme! Very good composition... the red drape remind me of Magritte. Very metaphorical image!

Back after a while,
Thanks to all for your comments and glad to see some people are still sensitive to surrealism :)
This is something I wanted to approach with the CG since a long time but it seems that it does not have the same success as the photorealistic renderings, probably because it needs more effort to be appreciated and this is also true with painting. Anyway beside the other rendering I think I will try to continue producing this kind of works as they add another dimension.
@mlynch : you are right, this is my tribute to Magritte who is probably my favorite. I used some postpro to get a more homegenous and soft result but you are right I probably should keep much more contrast between the elements.
