F#@*ing Sweet!

I've got the plastic model kit for that car. Did you use the model kit blueprints to build the car?? Very cool!

Impressive ! Amazing !

You should try to render it on a road, or in the pit lane or something like that.

What about a Skyline now ? :D

Hello all.

Yes I actually based it on the TAMIYA model, and along the line of making it, many reference photos/diagrams from many different sources...

I have actually written a tutorial on this, though am questioning its worth when there is a sea of tutorials on cars out there already. If there is enough interest, I will make it available...

Here is the wire (before mesh smooth) for it, and the highlighted part shows the level of detail needed to get the NURMS working correctly for those interested in how it all works...

Love the detail in the mapping, green rims are interesting

wow, thats some impressive detail! I especially like your texturing work. its a beautiful car, congrats man.

did you use patch modeling before applying the meshsmooth? Its definitely a detailed cage.

munkmotion

Hello again,

The mesh you see in the wire image is straight as I created it, just extruding edges and tweaking verticies... No patches or anything... all editable mesh...

Yes, scanline renderer, a lot of raytracing and GI... I had many interesting issues along the way, which is why I made a tutorial about it.

I think the lighting can use a lot more work, but the render times are huge and I think its time I stopped working on it. I may continue later...

Green rims "Interesting"? I'd say "Awful"... the blue is terrible too (a special corporate "raybrig" colour)... though, thats the colour of the original car... so I stuck with it, I went to great lengths to keep it as true to life as I could.

As for the textures, each sticker is a seperate image, the very smallest of which is about 1500x1500 px... I spent most of the time creating accurate textures that will stand up to extreme close ups.. all of which I created in Illustrator, then edited in Photoshop, then placed on the model as composite maps. Some panels having 30 seperate maps in the diffuse slot with 30 seperate UVW channels... multiplied by each panel... Not to mention the big "raybrig" underlying all the stickers across every pannel on each side. There's a lot of mapping involved with this car to say the least...

I think I will post the tutorial when I get a chance.

Very Nice car..I dare say that is the nicest 3d car model I have seen...The only thing that kinda sticks out for me is the wheels...but that was after I stared at it for a very long time...my eyes probably started to play a trick on me or somthing. Awsome work!!!:)

that's cool that you wrote a tutorial on this, but there is already a tutorial that is basically identical to yours, except it is based on a Nismo Pennzoil GTR. Did you have this tutorial in mind when you wrote yours? Here's the link:

http://www.wide3d.no/tutorials/Car_nurms_01.htm

But anyway, nice work on the car, the render quality is some what low as seen by the shadows, which can be fixed by higher sampling rates. I like the texture mapping though, I know that's not easy to do.

Hello all.

Yes, I know about that tutorial, I saw it some time ago, i just visited it now for the first time in a long time...

Now I look back at it, Yeah, they are pretty similar. Chances are that one explains some elements better than I can, and in other ways vice versa...

The difference is i tried to cover the all the aspects of the car model , not just the modelling... I concentrate mostly on the mapping.

Yes, the samples rate is fairly low.. I will correct that in the future (note that there isnt a "lighting" section in my tutorial yet?)

WOOOWWW ... that is great tutorial... and your web skills are sweet... graphic/web designer stepping into the realm of 3D. What you have done is exactly what I wanted to do as my first major project. I have done some other things in 3d... some typography, architecture, etc. but I wanted to really get dirty with it and your tutorial has given me a good jump. Also great idea in buying the car model I was going to the hobby shop this weekend to do the same thing...now I see that the reference of the model helped you with your work...

Thanks for the tutorial...
