View Full Version : Trunks's way to get realistic colors (sketchbook like - daily updates)
Trunks 07-09-2006, 12:05 AM Hi all!
This is my "sketchbook" thread. So this is not actually a sketchbook but I will be posting my daily colored sketches in here. I hope to get better with my usage of colors and lightning. I am going to do at least one image a day, hopefully more. I hope I can improve my skills as fast as possible. Thanks for everybody who reads this and try's to help me. Now here we go ...
For this first post I thought I should show you my latest color attempts, just to see where I am now. The most of this images were done for the daily sketch group here on cgtalk:

And at least some crazy bird I did today. The "Einstein bird":

Every C&C is very appreciated! Thank you!

Hey I like your football player (nice anatomy study). and the muchroom scene (good palette)
I would suggest to develop them to a more refined level.
Hi trunks,
I told you already that I think it's a good idea to focus on greyscale first before you tackle color, but in this thread where you focus on color, I just suggest a soft edged brush for blending.
You could use it to refine the football player to a higher level, cause right now the individual brushstrokes are takin too much of the attention away.

NR43: Thanks! I am working on this problem... I mostly stop my doddling too early ;)
Mu: Thanks, I am trying to do what you said ;) I never liked the way soft edged brushes make the images looking ... maybe you are right and I should go back to it ... but I never liked it very much so I never did it very much :)
Sorry for not updating for some time now ... nobody seemed to be interressted so I stopped updating. But now after 2 replies here is my work from today:

Wow, that is definitely some nice progress, trunks!
I don't know what you used for blending, wether softedged or not, but whatsoever you used: it worked very well!
Keep it coming!
BTW, the link you posted on my anatomy thread is just a commercial link for some receivers...could you edit it so it points to the correct forum?
:)
thanks.
I think you manage just fine :)
I should practice more on getting the right colors from the start. One of my weak points.
For you, not a weak point at all so it seems :)
Keep going
Oh and we're not "not interested" but just "very busy" ;)

I think you do fine with a hard-edged brush. I personally find blending to work out better with a hard brush, since it gives you a very discreet texture that works for anything. Blending with a soft brush usually gives a plastic, boring look. Even if you want that sort of look, it can be achieved with a hard brush as well. It's all in the pen pressure (or opacity) xP

Mu: It was hard brush :) I corrected the link in your forum ;)
NR43: Thanks ^^ No this only seems like I can manage it ;) Colors and myself are like satna claus and summer ;) Something which seems not to fit ;) I really have to practice A LOT more :)
eishiya: Yes I also like the hard brush style VERY much more than all the other soft brushes ;) Thanks anyway ;)
Today and yesterday I had really less time ... like no time... so I can you only show this very bad attempt ... sorry ;)

I just wanted to say that I liked the "The Dark" one you made, and the mushroom one. I thought those were your two best ones. I am also trying the same thing you are. I'm having the same problems, so I completely understand. Have a good one.
