The only possible reason there have been no comments on Chaperon Rouge yet is the time it takes to load. I have broadband and it still took quite a while, but WELL worth the wait. The background illustrations and fluid animation are breathtaking. Even the Brother's Grimm could not have conceived of a wolf as BIG and BAD as yours - very scary! I'm sure they are smiling in their graves.

Hmm I think it will be better if I make a Small and a Med quality version of the movie. Thx for the comment, I will do my best to resolve that matter quickly.

hey V!nce, really nice lighting on the character and the scenes are great. The shadowy beasts were good and scary too. A pleasantly dark film to watch :D

So... :

Poetic
...Too short ;)

it loaded just fine for me... i thought it was great. I think if the animation were a bit smoother, maybe more exaggerated and showed a bit more weight, this piece would be amazing.... how did you achieve all of those trees? was that paint effects or just matte paintings? either way, great job. and i dont know if you did it yourself or not, but the sound design was fantastic!

it`s always a pleasure to see animations and movies coming from france, cradle of artists!...and soccer teams:thumbsup:
what a masterpiece! every single shot is a great piece of art, I love the environments, the lighting, shadows, colors, everything
the only thing I am not happy with is the face and hair of the girl
send a copy of it to the people who made Hoodwinked, they had 15 millions do that poor quality film, but it was funny, tho

Hi,
Thank you a lot for the reply ! Im very touched.
- For the showreel the music is "death of black metal", miss alabama
- This movie was made with 3dsmax8, I will explain who did what :
Tristan MICHEL : Artistic Director of the movie, Background modeling: lighting and texturing ( forest shot ), Compositing.
Eric LE DIEU DE VILLE : Background modeling, lighting and texturing ( The castle and the city's ruins and some forest shot ), some render passes ( Particules, Volume Light ). Sound Design ( with the help of a compositor ), and Website.
Emeline BAFOUIN : All the Character Animation, alone, so it was a big challenge. Charadesign.
Vincent TECHER ( me ) : the grass ( hair and fur ), the wolves ( path deform and lots of smoke footage in compositing ), the modeling/skinning/rigging/unwrapping of the character, all technical stuff for the render ( Vray ), a little bit compositing, All the animation in the Nightmare ( morphing of the background ), and some render passes ( Particules, Volume Light ).
The tree's are mix of 3d geometry, and mapped plane for leaves. The bushes are low poly mapped planes.
If you have any question, feel free to ask :)
Thank you again for the reply !

Hey, one quick question, what method did you use to create the grass? was it a plug in?

thanks guys ^^
chrisbolton : In the first part of the movie, until she arrve to the ruins, he grass was done using Max 8 "Hair and Fur", rendered separatedly and composited afterward. Vincent was in charged of the process and it wasa lot of tweakings here and there to match the look we wanted to have.
In the ruins and after, the grass was done with simple mapped planes with an opacity map
BTW, for anyone interested we've updated the website with a short making of, showing a bit of modeling and compositing
Thanks again for the feedback

WOW!! I love her design, and the overall scale of it! Great work!
Some of the animation was a tad stiff, but the overall story and idea makes up for it for sure!!!

WOW Great piece of work.
I think the "weakest" point is the animation. The gentle look of the main character does not match too well with the acting choices, and there are also some spots that could have used a little smoothing (some walks have pops which are a little distracting). I imagined from the still a lot of mannerism in this character but overall I can't complain too much. It's a great piece, great atmosphere and great design.
Well done!
Gian
PS: 5 stars for me!
W0W i realy enjoyed to watch it
Grass with 3ds max Fur? and rendering with MR ??

Hi all
I was also one of the guys who worked on the short (Tristan) and I must really thank everybody for the comment :)
loni: The softwares we used are pretty basic: 3dsmax, photoshop and aftereffects. The painting effect is mostly due to the textures, mattes and camera maps and also the compositing.

Absolutely amazing mood and gorgeous environments. My only crits would be that the girl's animation was not up to the same quality as the rest of the film, but it barely detracts from the visual smorgasboard.

Thx a lot for the replies !
We know the animation was a bit under the rest of the movie, but it's a choice cause we were all not very good in animation. Our first aim was to take people on a huge trip in a forest. I hope it worked. Emeline BAFOUIN was the only one person to take in charge the animation, so it was a very very big challenge to match with the high background quality. We thought the animation wasn't enough terrible for make people leave the story, so it was not important if it's not at pixar level or other animation compagny. She did her best, and it was the most important for us.
Thanks again for the feedback, it's very interesting for us.

Very well made.
Well done!
And France always produces the finest artists, indeed (although I live in London, by choice ;))
A creepy breathtaking story of our 'innocent' red hood, which at last does not survive. YAY!
