I'm really looking forward to the challenge. I can't wait to see all the entries!

FINAL:
Brief: Atlantis is born again centuries later but to avoid a second destruction they take bounds to improve defense. They devise technology that hides their city under bubbles. Scouts (the smaller bubble/jellies) are placed around to heed warning if someone comes close to discovering their new civilization.

Some quick sketches for different ideas:

I eventually sided with a mix between the bottom two. I'm going with a story as though Atlantis once existed but after it's destruction they kind of decided to hide behind bubble-esque shapes much like jellyfish and they are able to hide here and defend against threats and so on.

I ended up liking the look of the city in the second one. So that will be my final sketch.

Here is a very quick color comp:

hey ram, looking good so far man.. 'm anxious to see
how far you push those air-bubble cities. as for the
first four scetches.. i would take the city on the left
out of no. 2 and put it in no.3 and keep the city in
the far right as well. this is going to be good :buttrock:

I was working with the in-progress matte and liked the direction of this comp more. I'm also still deciding if I should include the city ruins at the top. I think after pushing the bubbles higher I might not. We'll see

Sorry for all the misunderstanding. The city is actually BELOW the brights in the middle there. Those are the bubbles the city is behind. At the top is the remnants of the old Atlantis. But I think I'm going to ditch that idea since it is confusing. I hope that helps.

Here is my "final" painting. I have 2 different versions. One with the little bubble jellies hanging and one without. I used these things around the environment to make it feel more alive and alien. These things would act sort of as scouts to warn the city if anyone came close to discovering their city and they could form some sort of defense with the bubbles. I don't know, perhaps a bit too convoluted but here they are, Which one should I use?

Thanks. I see what you mean. Originally when desigining the city, I said I would have the bubbles be painted, but if this were ever taken to motion, those would have to be replaced by a 3d/particle element... along with the fishes, lighting effects/glows on the other "gellies" and so forth. Thanks for the crit though. I'll keep it in mind for future mattes.

I know the piece has changed a bit from the pink hued color comps, but that color seemed to conflict with what I had so I hope that this decision was a better one in the long run. I hope you all like it. This was a fun experience!
