Does anybody have a description of the RPF file format used by max/combustion?

The source is provided with the 3Ds Max SDK. It can be found in:

\MAXSDK\SAMPLES\IO\RLA\RLA.CPP

(its called RLA for historical purposes as it evolved from the rla format)

I wont be near a Max machine for a couple of day's, I'd try posting a question on the max forum & see if anyone can hook it out for you... Is this for Icarus?

RPF (Rich Pixel Format) is a video file format that can hold the alpha channel, z depht, texture, uv map etc. informations inside it.

I think he's after technical information on how to program his program to output RPF format, if its Simon Gibson from the Icarus project...

Yes, it is for Icarus. We'd like to export optical flow in an image format that other software packages can use. RPF seems ideal as it provides x and y velocity channels. Also, we're planning on doing some automatic Z-depth extraction from image sequences, so we need a format to store that as well.
