Hi friend.. I'd like to know more about how to develop a videogame; I have never made one, but I'm a Maya user and I know how to model an environment and a character, how to rig skin and animate him and so on, and now I think what I need is a game engine and some knowledge of programming language; but I have no idea how to merge Maya knowledge with programming knowledge.
For example I'd like to create a little room with a character who I can move using my keyboard keys; what's a good start point? can you give me some online resource?
Thank you very much!

i think a good start is the modding community, that uses the engines of already existing engines. unfortunately, i cant help you with links etc..

I'd start checking out Unreal engine it has the single best development tools of any engine i've experienced. It's more artist friendly than others, and it's programming language for game code is UnrealScript, it's based off of Java Script and as a beginner it's much easier to get a grip on than other engines that use C/C++ for game code.
Grab Unreal Tournament 2004 (good game on it's own too), then browse around the modding community, the forums at www.beyondunreal.com (http://www.beyondunreal.com) may be a good place to start. There's also Epic's own UDN (Unreal Developer Network (http://udn.epicgames.com/Two/WebHome)) which is not only for licencees but modders of UT2004, there you can find a LOT of tutorials on Unreal modding and you can download ActorX (Epic's plugin for max, maya and xsi to export from 3d app to Unreal format).
If you're not in a hurry you could wait for Unreal Tournament 2007 (hopefully coming out early next year). It uses a far more advanced version of the Unreal engine, Unreal Engine 3 (UT2004 uses Unreal Engine 2). Not only does it allow for much better graphical quality but it has even better tools: http://www.unrealtechnology.com/html/technology/ue30.shtml *drool*

Good luck :)

How much man power does it usually take to create a good mod? I've never done any game stuff because I always thought that I would end up wasting my whole time on the technical stuff and never get passed it :scream: I'm guessing at least two people for the art and programming parts?

Thank you very much guys!

I haven't ever loved so much 1st person shoot games, I hoped in something like a NeverwinterNights engine for Maya : )
Anyway I think that with ther UnrealTournament Engine I can do something more then a simple 1st person shooting game.

Thank you again.

ByeZ!
