this question is asked left and right around here, and they all say to go to either Stephane Marino (http://smarino.free.fr/)'s web site or a couple of other's whos links are broken. Marino's looks to be exactly what im looking for... but i cant seem to find the actual tutorial anywhere on it, nor a way to contact him and ask... could someone point me in the right direction here?

Mini Stretchy IK tutorial

What you need to do is measure the distance between 2 nulls, say one at the hand and the other at the shoulder, in case you are rigging the arm.
Using an expression with the Distance function, you can grab the distance (d) between these 2 nulls.
Now you compare that disctance with the added lengths of the 2 IK bones (l1 + l2), that of the upperarm and the lowearm.
Now you open up the Length of one of the bones. You set a condition saying that if d > (l1 + l2) then Length = l1 + (d/2 * stretch)
Stretch is a custom parameter ranging from 0 to 1. If stretch = 0 then Length will always be equal to l1 (the original length)
Now copy the expression from the Length of the first bone and paste it for the second bone.

You can check out RiggingPRO (http://3dquakers1.com/webroot5/index.php) for XSI for a more indepth explanation of this and other advanced rigging features.

I would recommend getting the 3dquakers DVD...it's the best money I've ever spent on a tutorial DVD. I've only been playing around with the XSI for a few weeks, and now I have a pretty good grasp of rigging(with stretchy limbs). Now I just have to catch up in in all of the other areas.
