Any clue as to what it's going to do, other than allow us to use CS4?

supposedly just bug fixes and the allowance of CS4. Well, bug fixes are good for me! Since its just a .1 release, it seems just like bug fixes. :\

asides from character studio updates, it also updates backburner (the 3dsmax network renderer manager and client system) to version 2.1.

note that it doesn't report version 2.1 other than in the install.log file in the backburner folder.

no idea if it adds features or not.

3ds max 5.1 is a free, downloadable maintenance release which brings added stability to most major functional areas including Scripting, Trackview (Function Curve Editor/Dope Sheet), Skinning, the Controller Subsystem, Editable Poly, Morphing, Unwrap UVW, IK and Bones, Parameter wiring, Render to Texture, the Set Key Animation System, and the Software Development Kit.
Other improvements include general, across the board stability based on real-world production performance feedback since 3ds max 5 began shipping at SIGGRAPH 2002.

One thing they fixed was the reactor controller, and I can tell you I'm stoked about that. Also, the wiring parameters dialogue now navigates correctly, like 4.2 did.
A bug fix is a good fix.:bounce:

some additional info about what's fixed.

apparently, the fix-list isn't available yet cause most if not all of discreets progammers are having a small break . . .

- A problem with collapsed Camera Map UVW-verts that I reported is now fixed.

- They did a great job fixing the displays of the dope sheet and the problems with the trajectory keys. They even show the time offset when moving keys in the dope sheet and curve editor.

- CS is working nice. no more rot gizmo problems

- Fixed Bones Tools, Connect Bones

- fixed the Trackview/Dopesheet display problems which were one of my major complaints.
It appears they have improved the display greatly on first glance...you can actually see the keys when zooming way out!

- the maxscript helpfile does list some new gems for coders. For example, lots of new stuff included regarding the layers dialog... ie, the Delete function is now accessible through scripting

- the splash screen is Red

some alleged downsides of the update

- Broke Tab Panel, Delete Tab

- You still have to right click twice to disable bones creation tools : one for the real bones tools, and ones for the "bone tools" maxscript new stuff

- Not sure if it's just me but, the Materials editor seems to be slower

these things come of the discreetboard of anyone is wondering. they're not my own findings, just thought you guys might be interested in this stuff.

cheers.

Has anyone else noticed any viewport speed gains?

I just finished defragging my drive and removing old junk software etc... so it may be from that as well, but the viewport does seem to be less twitch!

I used to have to hit ` all the time to redraw the screen... now it seems to be ok.

ehm...probably this won't get me popular...but what Pixar actually did is posting a link to the discreet ftp site, that starts 5.1 update download. Now, it's a good thing...."thanks, thanks, thanks"...But...people should have a valid serial number to gain access to that ftp area...So i guess posting the direct link on a public forum is not too "legal"...and fair...

:shame: :shame: :shame:

Who can explaine me, why the Radiosity Subdivide size (in 3ds max 5.1) is 1.0?I cann't work with Radiosity...

CiF

I was working on a char anim with max 5.0

I update to 5.1

and now if I key something in my scene, some vertex fly away !!!

It really sucks !!! it seem that those flying vertex correspond to a sub/object selection in my editable poly.

If I unselect those vertice before setting a key it's ok BUT :

because I use a morph modifier, all the morph target get some flying vertice !!!!

I don't really understand !!!! If now we have to deselect every subobject before setting keys .... it's gonna be a hell !!!

ANYONE get the kind of trouble ????

The problem could be related to something mentioned in a similar thread at discreet forum. But that one was on the whole object, not just sub-object. Anyway, the fix was to apply a set-key to your MESH at frame 0. Then go go set keys on your control objects. Try this and see if it works.

Mahlon: thanks for the help !!!

But what do you mean by "apply a set-key to your MESH "

to put a key on transform at frame 0 ?

Can u be more precise ... Pleeease :hmm:

CiF
01-19-2003, 06:36 AM
Another weird stuff I noticed in version 5.1 :

in the undo history, there is so many "outline"

what is it about ????

Also it seems that switching to version 5.1 erase your skin position (not on every objects) ... so beware !!!!

Is this update a bug creator ????

CiF,
Sure, just select your mesh at frame 0 (if it's made of different parts, makes sure to select all the parts), and activate "Set Key" and set a key at frame 0 for the mesh. This will stop your mesh from exploding when you set keys on your controllers and bones.

This seems to be the work around for now. Don't know how if affects skin pose and all that yet, as I haven't played with it enough.

thanks mahlon ... I'll try this ....

I already found another solution (not easy)
it's unselect all vertex in the mesh and every morph target !!!!
be unselect I mean, even if the editmesh modifier is closed I had to open it on vertex level select no vertex and close it.

that for thoses you will meet this bug !!!!....

but I hope mahlon solution works fine 'cause its simplier !!!

thanks again ...

I hope they have a 5.11 fix to this problem or I might be heading back to r5. Sifting through 40-50 objects to make sure everything was unselected made this monkey very grumpy.

Has anyone been able to reproduce it from a new scene? I've tried, but fresh scenes in 5.1 seem to work fine, but some (not all) older r5 scenes explode on me.

Has anyone experienced autokeying being "secretly" turned on after submitting a network render job?

The way to fix it is to toggle autokeying on and off manually. Weird.

Previously I had a problem with autokeying turning itself on, but it was a random problem. I did the same fix as you and just toggled it on and off. Hasn't done it to me in a while though, so I was hoping 5.1 fixed the problem.

Haven't tried it yet. I sure hope it works in new scenes created. Otherwise it would be an even more serious oversight than it is.

Having lost almost a full day of productivity to that nasty little bug I've gone back to regular ol' MAXr5

Iain McFadzen

Which is a PITA since plain ol' Max5 has bugs that make it next-to-useless for me :(
