the .obj file has only the object exported, nothing else (all of your bones, uv's etch wil not be in that file).
I dont know how u export a maya file to 3dstudio. And I want to know that. Couse I want to animate and map the model in maya. But I need it in a 3ds file. So if anyone have the answer, post!

You might want to try the interchange format .FBX by Kaydara (www.kaydara.com). I'm not sure if they have produced a Maya 4.5-version yet, but it worked like a dream with 4.02. Geometry, UV's, shading (no bump though) and some animation too. And the best part; it's totally free!

I downloaded it and installed it, but it just won't load up in Maya (4.5). The program just stop responding. Anyone having the same problem ?

The newest version of our FBX Plugins are available here:
http://www.kaydara.com/support/download/index.php?filename=plugins
These plugins include support for Maya 4.5 , Max 5, as well as XSI.
It is recommended that all users currently using the FBX Plugins upgrade to this version.
