The image planes in Maya use alot of CPU power when zooming, panning, dolly...etc.
Makes the framerate in the viewports drop fast.

What alternatives do you people use?
I mean it's hard to model without any reference when modeling with nurbs.
Any suggestions welcome.
Just want to know what alternatives you people use and what will be the best for me in terms of keeping the framerate high in the viewports.
Thnx.

The reason for this is that Maya uses openGL overlay for imageplanes, most lowend cards don't support it and allthough geforce cards do, it crashes with Maya.

So no, there is no easy way of fixing it if this is the problem, new drivers in the future might do it.

However, you could have a look at this: Ultra image planes (http://www.highend3d.com/files/dl.3d?group=melscripts&file_loc=ul)

Good luck

If you are not planning to upgrade your graphic card, you could try having a geometric plane instead of an image plane. then mapping your reference image on the geometric plane. This way could speed up the efficiency a bit.
