Layer blending question

Im having difficulty blending one layer with another in AE, Ive tried using solid layers, Jpeg layers and when i apply a blending mode to the top layer nothing happens. What am i doing wrong? Any help on this i would really appreciate. Thank You.

Blending modes require two layers to work, and the result is completely dependent on the subject matter of both layers and the blending mode chosen.

You need to show us the images you are trying to blend, or at least give some example. Sorry!
