View Full Version : PS3 used for Rendering?
Kinki 07-07-2006, 10:07 AM I heard that soon we can use PS3 to do the rendering because of it's advance graphic card. Is this news true?
Can Maya and 3d max to work with PS3 for the rendering?
If this news is true there will be another advance level of the 3D graphics...very nice...
Thanks,
KinKi

not sure where you heard this from but its hear-say and speculation. the PS3's engine is for realtime and i very much doubt they will port it to production environment.
of course this is just hear-say too.

graphics card does nothing for rendering. And the cell setup is supposidly flawed, based on a couple reports out.
BTW, unless AD has a linux client for Max, you'd never be able to render on the PS3 regardless.

i'm sure its just a false rumor....
although it wouldn't surprise me if crazy ken made a ridiculus claim like that to add to the already steaming high pile of ridiculus claims he's made about the PS3

It may just be a rumor, but it has some truth in it. The Ps3 will definately have a possibility to work as a renderer for whatever software you use, it's just that someone has to make the program to do it. The ps3 will support full linux programmability (or whatever they call it), so all you need is for someone to make the software. It'll probably not be sony tho.

it won't work well if the cell architecture used is flawed.

Not sure that the Cell is "flawed"...the industry scuttlebutt - and by industry I mean the folks who brought you the xbox - is that the Cell is better suited for serial computations like video decoding. Does that mean it's good at FPU/rendering stuff? Not sure.
Didn't somebody like Square show off a bunch of stacked PS2s doing some heavy 3D lifting at some conference back when it came out? Also, last year I remember a guy built a cluster out of a bunch of used 1sr gen xboxes.
So it's been done before but not really sure what the ROI will be with the PS3 costing $600, having only 256MB of RAM and what will most likely be a slow laptop HD. At this rate one should consider a bunch of Mac Minis.
IBM has been showing and/or shipping a Cell based Blade server. Maybe that's where the rumors started.
