1st price winners are really impressive, specially the 2D one!! although I don't agree about the rest of 3D prices at all. I don't say it because I would replace some winner (even that obviously I would) but I think arrangement of 3D prices is not fair.

Anyways, that doesn't mean every single winner hasn't done an awesome job, so congratulations and see you in the next challenge!

Nice!

I personally found the 2d entries a lot more pleasing on the eye and imaginative than the 3d ones that made the shortlist.
I think the 2nd and 6th place images in the 2d section are bloody amazing!

Congrats to everyone who made it!

Ill keep an eye out for the next challenge - could be a while though....

Thanks for the love everyone, I'm so honoured to get the community prize! It means a lot to me. :D

I'm sad to see a lot of people I liked didn't get mentioned, especially Jeromoo and Antrent. But I have to say this competition was a tough one and I don't envy the judges their job. I think they chose well.

Congrats to all the winners and the 2D artwork was great, but as far as the 3D entrants, you're kidding right?

No offense to the judges or the contestants for the 3D, but I have to respectfully disagree with the judging results.
There was far better artwork generated that didn't even get honorable mention. I can't believe the results from this and am sadly dissapointed. This is not because I didn't win or even get honoralbe mention because this was my first ( and last ) challenge anyway and didn't expect to win.
It just seems a bit upside down to me. I know there's much to consider in the judging process and not just appearance, but I can't help but think to myself "what in the world are they thinking?"

My 2 cents anyway....

I'm happy for the winners and congratulations for their works.

But I would like to know if the rules were not enough clear on something.
Because it seems the winners, has won with childhood illustrations. I am surprise by this choice. Here what I had done, I think of not being the only one wich have been disparaged by the adult aspect of my drawing.

Riddick my man - your pic is nice and all (thou kinda monochromatic) but this chalanges have a theme. And this ones theme was "Journey begins", and to be honest your picture lacks this feeling of begining of a journey. Yes its more mature then most of pics in this contest but again 2D winner is very not childish... and its a winner ;)

Better luck next time

Great work on all the winning entries from the journey challenge! I would have to agree that the 2d entries are especially impressive; the 3d images look good, but they just seem a bit stiff and lifeless compared to the paintings. My only complaint is about the placing order of the 3d images, Olivier Ponsonnet's 6th place image is far more technically impressive and interesting then anything that placed 2nd to 5th. But that is just my opinion, congradulations to everyone that entered and finished the contest! Alexi.

Well, you know I don't really think that I was much monochromatic than an other..
If you look at the winners, the 6th or the 7th.
And for your feeling...The mariners on the first illustration do not seems to be at the begin of a journey. In fact they seems to do not really be the actors of the scene.
The girl in the 6th illustration is not so far at the same point than my creatures, except her travel is more short...
Well, I don't really like to make comparison with the winners but I'm just not really agree with you...

Hi Riddick,

at first congratulations about you image! Its really awesome and well done!

But to get straight to the point. I have for sure studied the guidlines very well and i spend a lot of my time to watch a few hundret artworks... and this was a really hard task because every piece has itīs own greatness.

This RESULT is the sum of 5 differnt people with most likely differnt points of view.
explanation: "if one of us likes an image doesnīt mean that the other 4 judges have the same point of view" ;)

THE MAIN Guidline was to create a scene that encapsulates the emotions and trappings of a character (or group) setting out on an epic journey.

I think you captured this very well but i saw a lot images which dit this also!!!
In the end itīs sometimes just a few details that makes a image a bit more fascinating.

hi Riddick. I'm sorry that your work was not on the list. It is, in my humble opinion, an excellent work.

After reading all the reply of this thread, I found there's many ppl who doubts about the result. However, I want to point something out. Everything happens for a reason. Those judges became THE JUDGES of this contest for a reason, the winners get their prices for a reason. It is the fact, we can not change it, we only can, and should, respect those reasons.

I took time sorted out the entire entries shortly after the submiting was closed. There are around 20 works, in my opinion, should be in the top 20, which include yours, and most of today's 3d winners. but to get 7 best ones out of the 20, is not a easy thing. My point is, I would still dress our judge and today's result as reasonable fair.

Let's not keep our eyes on yesterday shall we? It is tomorrow that we should go for it. How about congradulate to all the winners of today, and try to be one of them for the next contest?

It's funny how things work out. I run the contests on Epilogue, and we usually only get a few entries - but even then it always amazes me how much difference there is in judge’s opinions. It's never clear-cut - I'm always surprised!

I think the judges have done a great job - all the pictures are strong or exceptional and deserve to be up there. Sure there are many others who were also worthy - but that's just the way it works!

I’m just grateful for the opportunity – to push my skills, to mix with other artists and see how they handle the same task. It’s definitely worthwhile. A prize at the end is just a bonus! ;)

But just you all wait til next time! Bwahahahahaha!... hmm... strange feeling of Deja-vu...! :curious:

riddick in my opinion it is not important being 1st or sometihng. ( but it dosent mean dont respect the judge, winners are all ok. congrats them all ) you win the award as a finishing such a hard work . it is important that you have a good picture to put on your demoreel. so look at the glass` full part . I like your image but dont think much about it and wait for next opportunities.

As far as 3D

Another reason I'm so befuddled at the results for 3D is this:

"In this Challenge entrants must depict a scene that encapsulates the emotions and trappings of a character (or group) setting out on an epic journey. The final works must demonstrate a depth of story and view that shows the character(s) up close and the journey beyond. This can be metaphorical, though it must be clear (without any explanation) how the image depicts a character departing on a great journey."

No offense toward the winner of the 3D challenge, although it's a great piece, it does not follow the challenge guidelines. You really have to squint to see the charater.

Congratulations to the winners, the honorable mentions, the community awards (yay, Theresa!) and everyone who put in the time and completed a piece that they were happy with, 'cause that way you all come out as winners!

Thanks to everyone who's spent time giving others feedback on their work... especially all those of you who commented in my thread and helped to make my piece so good!

A big thanks to the Judges, who put in a ton of their own time for no recompense aside from a big thank you (and the inevitable disagreements that follow.) So I'll add my big "thank you" for the work you all do.

And thanks, as always, to CGSociety for hosting this thing!
So now that that's all out of the way...

...When does the next one start!? :D

Nothing but my deepest admiration for the work of the winners, with the 2d winner being the absolute cream of the crop for me. Congratulations all, and to the judges, who must have had a stinker of a job to do selecting from such a good batch.

Some of the winners didn't even try to do this. So, just remember that for the next go 'round guys - it kinda makes you look inconsistent and too subjective. "Wow, that one is SOOOO GOOD but who cares if it isn't in the guidelines we have to give it an award." <-- That's kinda what this looks like.

I think the ALL the winners, 1-7 are jaw droppingly beautiful and stunning pieces of artwork - but I really really think that some of them ought to have focused on the actual dimensions of the contest instead of just wowing the viewers.

In any event, great prizes, great entries all around and congratulations to all the winners :)

(Also, there is a typo on the 2d winner's final image link, it says 2005 instead of 2006, oops! Hmm nevermind, they all do, its supposed to be that way?)

Congratulations to all of the winners! They are surely great artists...

From my point of view - dear jury - too many ballons and bugs within your result. And the rulez was broken again this time. I donīt really think that comunity interaction and wip stage was penalised as mentioned. And what is even more "funny" - the winning pieces looks more "SPECTACULAR" than "THE JOURNEY BEGINS"...

See you later

Well as i said a few pages bevore already... THIS RESULT IS THE SUM OF 5 DIFFERNT PEOPLE WITH SURELY DIFFERNT POINTS OF VIEW ON EACH ONE THESE AWESOME ARTWORKS.

If you like... i sugest you go to both forums from the challenge and save every single finished image. Then you start to pic up the best 100 pieces for 3D and for 2D seperate... after that you start to pic up your final 20 and so on.. And when you are finished in a few weeks i am curios what you have chosen...REALLY!

This has nothing to do with ballons... but i have very well recognited that a lot from the 3D people dit not read the challenge guidlines and made something complete differernt!

I know the Image you have done for this challenge and it is nice!... but... in my point of view it is not perfectly showing a "scene that encapsulates the emotions and trappings of a character (or group) setting out on an epic journey."

I think all the judges including me have done very well and have chosen the right images.
Please try to respect this!

Best regards Alex

Are we gonna hear any acceptance speeches? It's really interesting how the winners feel.

Hi Alex, nice of you to reply to people's disagreements as a member of the jury. You realize the arguments are endless. But since you're commenting on other entries, what do you think of mine :D .

I personally think that the challenge was awesome. I learned a lot working on it, it was fun and good experience. I don't feel sad for not winning, I didn't even expect to. In fact it gives me courage to work harder on the next challenge, which I hope is going to be held soon. The winners are really inspiring.

Thanks for the link Vampeta.

I understand from what you were saying that the judging was tough, "BUT" there were guidelines given for a reason and if not following the guidlines doesn't have an effect or penalty for the contestant, then why have them at all or penalizing anyone who dosen't follow them like submitting wips, turntables, or even the notion of following the thought of the "Journey" itself?

For that matter, couldn't I have just spent a fraction of the time and just modeled a John Deer tractor laying upside down in a distant field and won the contest if it really looked good? From the principal I've just learned here, I guess I could have.

As you have just stated yourself:
"scene that encapsulates the emotions and trappings of a character (or group) setting out on an epic journey."

First of all, no offense is meant toward the 3D winner, it's a great piece "BUT" it does not meet the guidelines of what I stated earlier nor in my oppinion does it even meet the above criterea of encapsulating the emotions and trappings of a character because I can't even see the character.

If no rules matter at all, then don't have any and just let everyone do whatever they want to do with no penalties at all.

Like I've said AS FAR AS JUDGING, the lack of consistancy and professionalism and the updide-down-ness of the judging that took place here does not instill enough confidense in me to enter any further competitions if these are the kinds of results one could expect.

On the flip side, there was truly a lot of beautiful work done here and it was still fun for me to be a part of it.

The background noise of complaints should be ignored by the judges and winners.
Even though I admit to deliberatey stretching the rules and ignoring the guidelines a bit, the one thing I understand is that the judges decision - by definition - is the right one. No arguing that.
Congratulations to the winners and the judges. Well done!

With that, I agree. I knew saying anything would not change a thing. I'm just old fashioned I guess, and the way I was raised, I was taught that rules and guidelines meant something.
Ah well, lesson learned.

From here on out I'll just be a peep and enjoy all the beautiful work that others do here and help out from time to time in the Lightwave and Zbrush section, but to enter any more contests..............nope.

Congrats to the winners and all the contestants that worked long and hard on their scenes.

WE WERE 5 PEOPLE WITH "5" DIFFERT POINTS OF VIEW !!!
And if one of us likes an image does not mean the other 4 likes it also.......

Ok, last time.

Vampeta, apparently you're not understanding the "principle" that I was trying to convey.

"Liking" is one thing, "rules", "guidelines", and the "penalties" for not following them is another.
Thanks for your oppinion on my work, but my point was not made because I didn't win. I knew I wouldn't win going into this contest especially against the pro's we have here on CG Talk. I did it for the sheer fun, comadery, and experience.
My point was in the non-application of the rules and guidelines in having any weight or bearing on the judging.

I'll be quiet in this matter from here on out to keep others from whincing when they look over my post...........it's just principle.

fourth time.. ;)

about what i said already it also incudes the sense of the rules.. If one of the judges... you know the rest.

I can tell you that i have studiet the rules over a month and i keep this very serious because the last 2 times i wasnīt even under the honourable mentions ... but in the end... IT IS THE RESULT OF 5 DIFERNENT PEOPLE!!!

And even if one of us thinks it donīt fits into the guidlines... there are maybe 4 more votes that counts ;)

Sorry to hear you quitting these challenges... i can tell you it is worth every second and i am sad that i havnīt had the chance to enter this one! (Judges canīt be winners ;) )

Alexander- You can't please ALL of the people all of the time! I think a lot of people are quite satisfied with the results. Obviously some people will have gripes, but that's inevitable- they won't agree, just as the five judges didn't agree, on the winners.

Personally I think the judges did a great job. Not to get paid, but because they love cg like we do- that's the point of the challenges, not to get paid but to share our love for our medium, meet new people while doing it and learn something new. There are some prizes I don't agree with, but I respect the judges' decision as they know what they're talking about.

Well done everyone and congrats! :)

There are some excellent results that came out of this contest. I'm sure it's been a great learning experience for all those involved.

I do agree with some of the points that have been made regarding the rules and guidelines. I think amidst all the eye candy the jury probably got carried away a bit here and there and perhaps voted more with their hearts than with the guidelines in the back of their mind? It's somewhat understandable (though a bit regretable too imo) as judging consistantly isn't an easy thing to do. I would hope that just like the contributing artists, the jury also learned a thing or two...

I totally agree with woody!!!
There were rules and guide line that in some images of the winner ( even if great) the partecipant didn't follow....nothing else, no arguing, just this...I didn't expect to win, even if ,as everyone, I wolud like to be in the price list...:)
But if I were one of the judge and someone else in the jury vote one image that doesn't follow the line guide.....I would say...."this image doesn't respect the principle of the challenge"
Ok now stop I have enough about this....
Anyway it was a great challenge and I learned a lot from many challengers here....

Wow that 2D first place winner should be in a museum next week! I'm really impressed with the overall 2D category but I think the 3D works are getting shafted a bit because the winner is not as earth shattering as the 2D category. Regardless, you know the contest is fair when cgtalk's own Stahlberg doesn't even make top six.....guffah.

So the challenge and 'key theme' this time was to portray a character (or group) and show it in the foreground ('up close'), dealing with the emotions of starting an epic journey.

http://features.cgsociety.org/challenge/journey_begins/instructions.php

Those instructions were not followed and not enforced.

So of course there is now confusion and a bit of anger. But it's not as bad as it might seem.

This has been a fantastic challenge. It's sad to see any bad feeling now when we should be cheering the winners and building up our energy levels to try harder next time. However the truth is that people ARE cheering the winners. And why not? They created beautiful images. And people ARE genuinely grateful for the hard work of the judges too. So things are NOT so bad.

But I believe that next time (and so many of us are looking forward to next time) it will be easy to avoid the bad feelings.

Here's what I suggest:
- Next time the rules be put online in English, French and German. That will make it SO much clearer and accessible for a truly multicultural community of entrants and judges to work for the same goal. I know we have an extremely intelligent resource of members here. Some people who could handle the translations would be easy to find
- Those same rules could also state clearly what rules are compulsory and what are only suggestions (so it is on the public record) Because people want to know
- All the rules could appear on the one web page. You could even perhaps download them as a PDF. So they're easy to find

And something we all can do: I noticed that during the challenge some people were reminding others about the rules, urging them to steer their artworks closer to the competition rules. But those voices were not common and ended up being drowned out by all the activity. I didn't say much when I could have because I felt a bit in awe of some of the brilliant members and therefore felt a bit shy about it. But it could be good next time if we all remind people, as soon as possible, if we think they're going the wrong way.

These simple things would help a lot. We don't need bad feelings in this fantastic community. This was my first challenge and I've enjoyed it heaps. I really want everyone to come back for more.

One last thing: congratulations to the winners, and many thanks to the judges.

Now, where's my flame-proof suit? ;)

glenn23

I respectfully have to disagree with those who felt the rules weren't followed closely enough by the winners. We're artists aren't we? Aren't we supposed to be bending the rules, looking under rocks and tweaking convention whenever possible?

I love these competitions because they're so open ended and encouraging of artistic exploration. I would stop entering if it felt like I was just fulfilling some art directors requests. I get enough of that already. In fact I thought the directions might have been a bit too specific this time but I was very pleased to see how some people tweaked them and came up with wonderful stories and images.
In the spectacular challenge I tried to push the concept as far as I could and I feel I got rewarded for that. This time I tried to stay more on concept and came up without a placing.

Seems okay to me.

Mdavid: I totally agree with you and me too next time, if I'll be able to be in the next challenge, will say if in my opinion someone is going out the rules...
glenn23: I understand what you mean saying that this was an artistic exploration, but the point is that even if there were too much rules .. WE HAD TO FOLLOW IT...IF NOT...PENALITY...
Ok is art, but if I don't want follow the guidelines or I made a mistake and I don't follow it...then I think that the jury MUST apply what was writed: THOSE IMAGES WILL NOT BE ABLE TO PART TAKE TO THE JUDGEMENT....
Anyway was my first challenge for me as well and as I wrote...beautifull....The winners images are beautifullllll...nothing bad to say about the quality...they made a great job...congratulation guys...

First, I know that this is a much debated issue that was raised because we're dealing with principles and I also know that I said that I wouldn't say anything more about it, but I can't help but to bring up one important point that ties in with this issue that maybe could be food for thought and why I dissagreed with the results.

One thing that I like about CG Talk is the level of professionalism among the artists and members here. The point of this web site is to bring the community of artists together of both the 2D and 3D genres so we can help, learn, promote, and challenge each other in our craft to better develop our skills and prepare us for the real-world demands of commercial art whether public or private.

I come from a very humble graphic background to which I've been involved in for around 16 years and which I freelanced in for roughly 12 of those years. Though it is of humble orgins, if there's one thing I've learned is that if you want to be successful, you have to KEEP THE CLIENT HAPPY. That's what it's all about.
One of the most important points of keeping the client happy is to give them what they asked for. You may have some leeway as to how you portray that artistically, but it still must fall within the guidelines that the client wants.

Now imagine that instead of this being a contest created by CG Talk, that it was a client that came to us and asked the community to come up with a ( 3D ) scene for a movie poster to promote their movie "The journey begins" with all the same rules and guidelines that this contest had.

Now if we presented all the works in the same order that we have here to the client, they would probably say what I'm about to say to you.
"Well everyone, we thank you greatly for your time and work that you put into these scenes and they are all absolutely beautiful, but it is still not quite what we asked for. It is important for the main character of our movie to be up close while being able to see off into the distance while at the same time showing all the emotions and trappings of the character setting off on his epic journey".

Just food for thought.
Now I will be quiet.

On the other hand, many illustrators are hired for their unique voice - their particular take. In film and in gaming, the illustrator often takes an idea and runs with it. Many times producing a much more exciting image than the one expected or initially described. I've worked as an illustrator for quite some time. Sometimes I'm hired for my wrist. I'm giving the client only what they describe. I am an extension of their thought only, not mine. Those jobs pay the bills, but they are not as rewarding as jobs from clients that hire me for my skill and my vision.

I understand some of the complaints. Complaints that would knock my illustration out of the 5th place. I did not have nearly the deep space as others. I had fun with the concept. If I did not place, I wouldn't be distressed, because this is fun. I'm not suggesting that anyone here is distressed. I'm just putting my thoughts down. I totally understand the client/illustrator relationship. However, I'm not doing it for money or for a client - I'm doing it for me and to have fun. I try to produce an image that fits the general concept, but also allows me to create an illustration that is to my liking. There was an exceptional amount of great work in this competition, work that could have easily replaced mine. The judges have a task that I don't envy, they also have a task that I greatly appreciate.

I remember when I was working on a particular animated showed and the art directed asked me for a BG and I gave him something different, but still satisfied the spirit of the concept . He liked it better. Sometimes keeping the client happy means giving them far more than what they expected. I have worked for a few really dumb clients over the years - some that I have had to educate in the process. I have also worked with some great clients that know a great deal and they art direct an image out of me that is far better than had i done it alone. Not all clients are so rigid - nor are all judges.

Now if we presented all the works in the same order in front of a client, they just might say - "it's not quite what I asked for, yet it is far more than I expected. I am pleased" That's the ideal situation - when you are allowed to put your vision into image while still satisfying the spirit of the concept. Both the client and the illustrator are happy.

This is my 6th competition, they have all been fun. When they cease to be fun, that's when I cease to do them. Because they are still fun, I'll see you all in the next one.

Well, that's a a lot of really good well-argued points, too. I think I'll just keep my head down and not state and opinion, but wow, everyone's got some really good things to say on both sides! :)

Yep they are good arguments and nicely written too. Thanks glenn23 and SideAche for your very intelligent comments. And thanks to Woody too.

I suppose next time I would love to see the organisers of the competition say something like 'well here's the basic concept, run with it' or 'here's what is compulsory, run with that.' Just so all entrants know what kind of competition it is and work with the same expectations. I think that's what was behind the confusion. The Journey Began, and some contestants sailed off in one direction and others sailed off in another direction.

Doesn't mean it wasn't fun though. I enjoyed it heaps and even this thread has taught me some stuff.
