View Full Version : Maya Toon Shading with Mental Ray

Hi Everyone,

Recently I've been trying to create a few simple characters in Maya for a toon shaded short. Being new to toon shading (and not having Maya 7 at the time), I found a bunch of good tutorials that allow me to use a texture map and render with Mental Ray. However, when I render it, there are tons of artifacts on the face:

Turn Table:

There are no seams in the geometry, all normals are facing the same direction, and no UVs overlap. Does anyone know how I can fix this? Or perhaps a way to use a texture map in a toon shade? I just got Maya 7, but I can't get it to work there either. Please help!!

Thanks in Advance!!

Looks like the toon shadow/Diffuse you have set is not working right.

Thanks softdistortion! I adjusted the diffuse, and it improved the artifacts in the render a lot. The only thing I need to figure out is how to retain the hard shadows. Any tips?

Thanks again!!

Could you be a little more specific on what you mean by retaining hard shadows? I find that just tweaking the ramps will get me so far, then I might have to adjust the mesh by eaither making it smoother or adding edge loops to get crisper delineation.

You might want to look into layered textures for combining a texture map with a toon shade. On my Teen Titan Robin character I used this technique to add specific "ink lines" to a few areas such as the elbows and knees.

Have you possibly mixed depth map and raytrace shadows at the same time? I've sometimes accidentally set both on and get really bad artifacting like this.
