MY ARTWORK DISPLAY

Dear CGTalk members,

I hope you are doing well and things are looking good. Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Jaidev Kesavan, 19 years old, from India. I signed up for CGTalk membership and put up my portfolio pieces last month, but this is the first time I am posting on these forums. Needless to say, I am rather concerned (albeit, scared) about violating forum rules, since this is the first professional forum I have joined in my time on the internet. I hope I will make lots of friends here and we can all have a great time. :) Now, getting to the point at hand,

http://paladinsword.googlepages.com/bw_to_color.jpg

this is an 'artwork' (if image editing in Photoshop can be called such a thing) that I made some days ago. The objective of this task was to convert the black and white picture (left) into a colored one (right). The results of my efforts are here for all to see. :)

My teacher liked it, but I want to push myself in this field to achieve as much as I can. I have been dabbling in computer graphics for the last four years and I want to compete with the best. That means I need to push myself to excel. Hence, I decided to post my work here and request that you, my dear colleagues, criticize it to your heart's content. I would, however, like to add that some helpful hints and/or pointers would be appreciated along with those crticisms 'to your heart's content'. :)

Thanking you,

Yours Sincerely,

Jaidev Kesavan

P.S: In case any of you have free time, could you also post your comments about my CGPortfolio in the portfolio's Guestbook? I know my work isn't exactly 'original' and that is why I refer to myself as a 'putting things together' guy for the time being.

He's a bit orange overall.

Some of the skin colour shades transitions are not smooth enough. (the ear is very obvious)
The way the hair and skin meets is too sharp and bright...he is going bold after all.
His teeth is a bit too white and even blue in appreance.

I find it's overall a very good job. I do agree that you could calm down the orange of his face a little bit and the only thing I find you should really try to make a little bit better is the transition from the hair to the face tones. It is a little bit to harsh. Try to smooth that down a little bit.

But I do this sort of stuff professionally and I know how difficult it is to transform a black and white photo into colour and I honestly think you did a great job already. Most clients would probably be VERY pleased with your result.

Dear Linda and Gitte,

Thank you both for your comments. :) Amazing how I managed to skip right over some of those errors before you guys pointed it out to me. :(

I am currently working on some more assignments, which should take a day to complete. I should be able to finish the final touch ups on this by tomorrow at best. :)

Thank you all once again. I'll be posting all my works for critique here. Seems a heck of a lot more convenient than making individual threads for each.

Yours Sincerely,

Jaidev Kesavan.

Sunday, 9th July, 2006 - UPDATES

The black and white to color picture has been updated. Please check the first post in this thread for the updated photo. :)

The changes made include:
1. Dabbled with the person's hair to make it smoother, especially around the edges.
2. Added a 'very' faint shadow on the right hand side of the photo.
3. Played with the lighting.
4. Removed the 'Orange tone' that was prevalent in the previous photo.

Problems unsolved:
1. The shadows - I can't seem to put any sort of shadows in place in this picture.
2. The teeth and the area around it - More or less a shadow problem. Desaturation seems to do very little to help here.

Could anyone please tell me what tools I could use to put some shadows in place? I really would like to fix those teeth. Kindly mention any other problems you find.

Thanking you,

Yours Sincerely,

Jaidev Kesavan.

I would make a feathered selection of the hair in the black and white version and overlay it on the color version. Of course fiddeling a bit with layermodes and color correction options. It seems that you have lost a little of the original contrast in the hair in the black and white photo. There are some dark parts which are nolonger there in the colored version.

For the very black spots (ear, nostril etc.), I'd make a selective color correction choosing blacks and adding a little magenta and yellow, perhaps take away a little cyan - you have to experiment a little with that.

For the teeth, I'd suggest that you try something like that too and add a little yellow and/or magenta. Right now, the teeth look a little blueish to me.
