how come I can't use any per particle attributes on a software rendered particle? does it have anything to do with the software rendered ones use material and the hardware rendered doesn't?

BTW the attributes I'm talking about it all the ones that change the particles colour...

Use a particleColorMapper node. If you look in the Node and Attribute Reference you'll see a description of how to do this.

When you make a particleColorMapper node and connect its color output to the s/w rendered particle material, it will allow the per-particle color attribute in the particle shape node to do what you expect.

well I just found out that I could just use ramps in the material for changing colour or opacity, so I think I found the answer to one way of doing it :)
