Frame Blending ( like a onion Skin)

Here a saw one guy's demo reel , he did the nice effects , i dont have idea how he did it .
but i forgot his name ,but i had his dem reel.

the effect was..

he rise his head from down to up . when he did that too more heads was there. how he did it
is nay plug ins needed to that?, or can we done in after effects scriptng . and i had anotehr example

on left side Flash Thumbnail second one (guy head) they named as digital optical.
i want to make same effects in my project. how to do that?

Effect >> Time >> Echo.

Make sure you're using it on a locked shot otherwise your background will "vibrate" as well. You may also need to change the "Echo Operator" setting depending on how bright/dark your background is lit.

Nice, its the way to do the effect?. ,
then why they mentioned as Digital optical effecs?
