View Full Version : How can you create a completely white enviroment but still able to cast shadows etc?
James Bending 01-16-2003, 10:53 AM Hello,
Im trying to have a clear white floor (with no shading) underneath my 3D model. The aim is to just keep a totally white enviroment
Im doing this by making a plane object underneath the model and then skinning it with a matarial that is self-illuminating white 100%. I then make the enviroment colour white.
I know that this is a bad way of doing it, i cant cast a shadow from my 3D model onto the floor.
So would anyone mind telling me how to create a completely white enviroment but allows objects to cast shadows etc on a completely white floor.
Hope that made sense, thanks alot for your time!

Create a matte/shadow material and apply it to the floor object. Remember to turn "receive shadows" on in the material options.
That will do the trick, whatever background you use.

first create a plane, and from material editor, change the "standard" to matte/shadow(I forgot which type, somthing like this). In the material editor, the "ball" will appear blank. Have your light cast shadow, and render. I will make confirmation on what type of material later. Sorry really forgot the name.

Oh... Cool, after I played around a bit with the matte/shadow settings I managed to get my shadow! Thanks alot guys, you saved me alot of time!
By the way what I was doing wrong when applying the matte/shadow map I had;
A) Stupidly set the shadow brightness to 1
B)Even more stupidly set the shadow colour to white!
Thanks again

COuld be the problem with your model property. Right click the model, and see if the cast shadow is checked.
Or it might be your light, turn the cast shadow on.

...sounds pretty straight forward, but what to do when you want to use GI (fR) . The shadow/matte material doesn't support GI! I guess the only work around to that is to just crank up the GI reception parameters on the floor mat to 'burn it out'...any other ideas??
cheers.

Ah, but genki-san, this is where you are mistaken.
Matte/Shadow can receive Global Illumination shadows just fine.
I belive FinalRender still has issues with Matte/Shadow materials, which I'm assuming is why you say it doesn't work. But if you're a Brazil user, there is no problem.

so true. since the current release of fR doesn't support it OTB, I guess I 'll have to wait and hope for the next upcoming and soon to be released version.
meanwhile, I'll just be sad.
