Guitar Vader is a japanese band we had the pleasure to meet in Tokyo. They did some great songs for the games "Jet set radio" and "Jet set radio futur" for Sega and are really nice people !
Me and Mathilde Soussi made this unofficial video in order to learn some new techniques and skills. We used 3ds Max, After Effects, Photoshop and some paper.
You can see the video there:

wow!

I LOVE the style.
Looked totally awesome and cute... the puppets were neat and the overall texture and look just great.

I'm doing musicvideos myself aswell (since I love them) is there any way I can download this creation?

Hi,

I like it a lot, the look-and-feel is great. I do think it could use a little bit more 'action' near the end. The music is dying out, but that doesn't mean that the animation should die out too. But still it's a very original piece of work.

Love the 2d vs 3d; my favourite room was the very last one, the sky was perfect and the soft pastel feel was very successful. I thought everything looked spectacular :-)

Thanks a lot for yout comments !

Actually this short took more time to make than we thought, and it explain the lack of action at the end. I wish we had more free time to complete the video...

Wow! That's an awesome (unofficial) musicvideo with a very interesting style!

Two questions that have risen to me:

How did you do the lighting on the walls etc. in the television shot? Did you map the images to a light, or did you do that in post? (working with a mask from the 3d-scene or so) As it will have been quite hard to match up the images well to the music?
How did you do the 2D puppets? First created in AFX, rendered, and mapped onto planes in the 3D-scene? Or did you export the cameramove into AFX to be able to put the puppets in later?
I hope you can answer those questions, as I have had them for quite a while about 'this style of animation'! All the best on your further projects!

Thanks a lot for your kind comments !
Mathilde and I tried to do something different, and we are very happy that so much people like it.

Dutchman:
-For the lighting of the television room, i used the mapped television screen as a light emitter. I used final render for this.
-For the puppets, we sometimes animated directly in 3dsMax, sometimes in AFX.
As the camera move is almost always linear, it was easy to recreate it in AFX without any camera export or matchmoving.

Digit:
Yes, Guitar vader wrote "Magical girl" and "Super brother" for the game Jet set radio. Great songs ! (And a great and underated game. Jet set radio future, if not perfect, is really an awesome game, and one of the best xbox one in my opinion)

More infos:
-We rendered everything as passes. So, for each room we had from 5 to 12 passes, composited in after effects.
-The grass is made with Hair in 3dsmax8. (a pain to use and to light by the way)
-We used a lot ParticleFlow for the particles, pictures cutouts, we painted textures with aquacolors, we used artrage, photoshop.... A little bit of this, a little bit of that really.
The idea was always to do something with a "what did they used ?" feel, so it's not really CG, but not really hand-made either....

Ive been a bit late checking this out due to quicktime problems on my behalf..

Very nice video! Good, simple idea with a nice visual style. Great lighting on the TV room too.

Pretty cool song too - JSR and JSRF had amazing soundtracks - love the Guitar Vader track 'Super brothers'!

Nice to see another JSR fan - its not a perfect game but the visual and audio style is incredible and was very inspiring to me.
That is probably the main reason why i still have my Xbox console still. If only they would make it work on the 360!
Id love to see a next gen JSR - celshaded games are ace!
