is it possible to get a light to cast a dmap shadow only, and not emit additional light source ?

Beleave so!

Anylight>Attribute editor

Uncheck the 3 Boxes
Emit Specular Etc

Then turn Dmap Shaddows on

Might Work

But im preaty sure that if you just turn the intensity to zero
but turn shaddows on it could work?

Hi,

Make a spot light with all the settings you like, and have it casting shadows. Once you are happy with it, duplicate it and in the new spot light turn off shadows and turn the intensity of the light to negative 1 (-1). Actually just make the intensity of the duplicated light the negative value of the original light (if the original light is 2, make the intensity on the new light -2). This way the negative value on the second light cancels out the light emitted from the first light, but the shadow is still cast. If the lights need to move, just point and orient constrain the second to the first. It works!

Good luck.

yup, that will work, alternatively you can do it with one light if you:

Set the light colour to black
Leave the intensity at 1 (I can't remember if this matters or not)
Set the shadow colour to a negative value e.g. -1
