thanks for the comments! I agree about the background...definately needs some work. I'll try and
come up with a scene for it instead of the photoshopped
backdrop. In the meantime, here is a wire view.

damn untill i saw the mesh i thaught it was a 2D art pic maybe add some depth to the render

it's all really really good but maybe you should saturate down the colors, just a bit. it's to bright right now, colors are just too hot, cool em down.
it's great though
Crap! I completely thought the first pic was 2D. That's one awesome wireframe cage you have going. Keep it up! Can't way to see more updates.

You are definately right about the saturation...It needs some adjusting. I think a new lighting scheme could help that aspect as well. Thats what I get for rushing things!

Great model. I like the colors as they are. There are plenty of frogs that bright, and its a pleasant change.

uuah man...as I saw the first pic I thought about some 2d art pic ;) ...nice work...do you use some kind of comic-renderer? if yes get the outer lines of the dragon more contrast ;)
keep us updated ;)

as resident dragon luvr, I must say this is a beaut, I've seen many dragons, but man this is just wow. 5 stars.
Also what's your secret with the texturing? it's exactly what I was trying to accomplish http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=2680 , do share

Thanks again for all the comments! I did not use a comic render or any filters or cell shaders. This is a standard lightwave render
with radiosity.
I don't think it's a secret technique really for the texturing...
I basically painted all the maps in greyscale and used Lightwave's
gradients to define color based on the grey value. I also used lots of weight maps as my 'alpha' maps so I can get a smoother blend between surfaces....there are a few seams here and there though.
There is lots of use of the 'fresnel' type effect with gradients based on incidence angle and also slope (like the eye area). But,
it is not over-complicated...in fact I think its the easier way to texture stuff.

I smell a small tutorial :), maybe I can apply this to Max somehow

Great work, man!
My only complaint is the BG color... maybe it could be darker.
Anyway, canīt wait to see more of this beauty!

great work man....so you re saying the maps are mostly procedural in nature?

To Titan:
There are very few procedural textures in this render. I painted the majority of them in photoshop, only in greyscale. I then used
the gradients in Lightwave to add in the color.
For example, say you paint a black and white linear gradient in photoshop. In Lightwave, you can add a color texture gradient that uses the painted gradient's value to change the color...so, you can make the white part green, and the black part yellow, and it smooths inbetween.
So, if you paint a bump map of scales, then gaussian blur it in photoshop, you have map that you can use to define a color change in Lightwave...like say from orange to red... ;)

AMAZING !!!
I don't know how you've done it, but it looks like a 2D drawing!!
Perfect textures! just change the background and that's it.
