I think we probably need a little more information to help you out ;)
What do you want to do (motion graphics, film, video), what kind of computer are you running etc
It's like asking "Which is better, milk or dark chocolate" . . . it depends.

Its most of for film + animations. I am running on amd x2 4400+ and 4gb ram, gonna get another 4gb so I can have 8gb :P im running on windows xp pro x64.

for heavy compositing works DF is better than AE in almost all features, but if only make simple compositions and mograph work AE has one better relation cost x benefit

I agree with the above posters, but also wanted to add that 8GB RAM may be wasted $$ since 32bit apps can only use 3GB?
