Hi viewers! This is my shot at making Batou-san from the anime Ghost In The Shell. I mostly modeled from one reference and my main target was to get a good cell shading on the charater. I'm still trying to decide if I should go on with the rest of the body or if I should start remaking my Ichigo from the Bleach (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=291296)anime. If you guys think I should practice on modeling heads for a while longer than I'll remake the Ichigo head and model the rest later.

Pretty late with the update. Decided to just model from top to bottom so now you'll see a little of how I want the body done. I'll try to finish the torso, make a post about that with back render and then get on with the hands. Might erase them and make separate models and attache....donno...still tinking about it....

before you move on at all, take your camera and set the aperature to 50 mm then go back in and make his head much much wider than it is.

yay! Ghost in the Shell fan art!!
don't screw this one up!! I'll come find you!

and just ike gunslingerblack said, his head is a bit wider, and I think you should focus on that before moving onto his body. and I'd rather like to see him with that leather jacket on rather than naked, even if you're planning to model him naked first and then put clothes on him, I'd rather just see clothes.

Gits! wohooo!
Motoko Kusanagi, I love you!!.......ok, that was a bit too much.

already some gave comments on the head.
I would say you are one who builds model based on camera views. your front face is excellent, your side is, i assume, would be great as well. However the 45 degree view is just ...emm...not-so-anatomy. I would image your head, from top view, looks like a square becoz the cheek is too sharp, there's no transition from the front to side.

but again. great work, great front face. keep it up

Since all of you said the head wasn't wide enough, I took my 5min before going to sleep to fix this. I've set the aperature to 50mm like gunslingerblack said and made it wider. JackZhang, your right about modeling using views, and yeah I did make it kinda flat, as you can see. Honestly I have no ideea how to fix that, besides taking all the face vertexes and streching them along the head. You have a side and front render along with the reference I used (now you can see why it is kinda flat). It's the only reference I used in viewport the rest just misc photos browsing with windows picture viewer. Thanks for answering, waiting for more c&c :)

i agree with jackzhang, the head in front view looks really good but the side view needs tons of work.i think you should look at some reference pictures. dont give up, you are almost there!

I've tried to make the side view a little better and didn't get that much of a difference. Didn't have time today but twomorrow I plan on making the side view a lot better, make it rounder, although I think it shouldn't be alot rounder because this gives him the actual tough face. Most of the differences are visibile at the chin although I streched all the face from the cheeks torword the ears. Can't wait to fix all the bugs out of the head....If any please post:). Thanks.

So I made most of the body. need to finish the hands and legs. I tried to get the hang of garmet maker and ran in to a problem: after applying garmet maker it corupts my file. When loading the file it just blocks and the ram just keeps going up. Thought it was normal but it should have loaded it in 5 minutes:surprised. Guess there will be no garmet maker+cloth modifier for me:sad:. Because of that I didn't have time to finish the model but I promise the next post it will be done. Just waiting for your critiques :D.

ah~ i like the what you fixed on the face, the lower jaw, from the side view, is a lot more anatomically correct. If it is possible, could you post the wireframe of the front view and the side view of the face, so i can give further help? The ear has a weird shape, but let's not worry about it now.

great progress, great achivement. Do not hurry yourself. Take your time, slow down a bit, make sure every step of yours is solid, you sure will produce a great model eventually.

Ok. 3 wires. I know the ear is horrible. The face wire is a little bit in chaos but I fixed some of it. About the previous post...well I know the shoulders are a little bit out of line, gonna fix that. Hands so far are to big. I know I rushed it a little....the face isn't as I want it either (I would remake the nose from scratch:sad:)...i just feel like I'm posting the same thing over and over with no actuall fixes....

Thanks for helping:D.

i would highly suggest going back and remodelling this character, the edgeflow needs improvement if your going to do any sort of animation with it. also im noticing alot of people do especially people just starting out, they use a low resolution mesh and the push and pull points to get the result they want on the hi instead of adding resolution, you need to first reconstruct your model so that the edgeflow resembles this
http://img238.imageshack.us/img238/2277/piratewipbegin5fm.jpg
and then you need to add edges so that the model looks like this
http://img149.imageshack.us/img149/6412/piratewipend9it.jpg
you may be thinking that it's too much to handle but if you do it one edge at a time and plan out your low res first you basically get the hires for free.

Well...I kindda knew that I got the wire wrong....but it was to late...I've been on a modeling frenzy and forgot about the wire order. And since I bearly get the chance to work on this it came kind of hard for me to get it back from scratch, especialy since I posted here (respect CGTalk:bowdown:). Well if most of you agree that the shape of the head is good I'm just gonna model over it with the right wire order. In this case it will take a lot less time.

Modeling problems: making ears...huge problem...hate it; making nostrils....I always get a couple of triangle polys there and I have a hard time putting them in place and then there's the problem with having few polys on the cheeks and they get out square. I'm not asking for exact examples...just pointers...How do you keep your edge loops clean? I always mess up. Oh well...back to the old drawing board:arteest:. Thanks for helping and replying.

well i definitely mean follow your old form, even though that can be worked on abit, but i feel that if you get the edgeloops to flow correctly it will become easier for you to get the forms on the face, my advice to you for ears is, model one ear thats friggin awesome and use it when you can thats what i do. as far as nostrils go, a few triangles are fine just know where to hide them, this comes with experience,

keep going

So this would be my remake...not much to say except there will be alot of tweaking. I'll try and make a new ear:scream:...well...just glad I had time for it:D. Hope it's close to the old model and hope I got (most of) the wire right. Thanks for keeping a close eye on my model gunslingerblack and JackZhang.
