MGAC-015 - Wizards pet
This Mini-Challenge is quite demanding... (I noticed from the previous mgac's that this might be too demanding but lets push the envelope ok? :) ...but I hope the theme inspires you to create fantastic character. Your goal is to model and texture wizards pet/familiar that reflects the alignment and nature of its master (the wizard). The nature of the creature should be for example good, evil or simply chaotic. Wizards pet can be either real-life animal or fantasy creature...you decide!
I recommend that due to the timelimit (one week) you seek simple solutions for design. This exercise is aimed to hone your speed and thinking/idealizing skillz!
- 800 tris
- 512* Diffuse map
- 512* Specular map
- 512* (choose either Normal, Glow or transparency map. Only one of these allowed)
Final submissions must include 1 render, all texture maps and a small synopsis (about 2 rows) about the MASTERS (wizards) nature. Concept art for the pet character is a plus! :)
Starts 03/07/06
Ends midnight 09/07/06.

Im on BUT! this time i will blow all my chances of winning. Ill work together with my girlfriend who´s a concept artist. I will make up a concept and do everything except drawing the final concept images.
I like the theme and i wish to follow your rules and guidelines. Is this ok?

Yeah, let's make this a optional Team/collaboration challenge! :) max 2 persons (1 modeler, 1 concept artist). Due to a huge work load of this challenge it's only fair. If you are a workaholic and have free time in your hands it's still ok to do this solo :)
Have fun and I expect to see some cool results and many, many entries! Summer and sunny weather is so overrated anyway :D

Mine will be a lazy siamese cat with glowing blue eyes, a sultans hat and a golden pipe on a flying red pillow with gold tassles on it and some nice effect after it.
That and / or a djinn cat.

I did some doodles and thought things over and decided on Kreacher! He is a house elf that once belonged to the Black family but now has been inherited by Harry potter. Kreacher was the servant of a very dark and prejudice wizarding family and has addapted their views on Mudbloods and muggle borns. He is extreamly old, dirty, and hates being in the service of Harry who as well hates being the master of Kreacher.

Heres the rough geometry for Kreacher, Im just a TAD short of double the tri limit at 1298. but i figured it would be easyer to just get him built and cut him down rather than try and limit myself as i go. hopefully ill get some textures on him before too long.

Well, if it's wizards, there's only one I could possibly consider; Rincewind :D
So here's his pet, the luggage. It follows him around on hundreds of little legs (or, due to the polycount, 16). Made of sapient pear wood, it's very aggressive and it holds a lot more than it's outer size would suggest.

dpizzle: I could have, but I didn't really want to waste the texture space. Looking back, I probably should have... ach, weel.
I've run out of time to spare on this without feeling guilty about neglecting other projects. I think it's definitely helped hone my speed skills. Kept me looking for faster and more efficient uses for modo's sexy toolset, so it's filled that goal of this MGAC :)
And for the other requirements of this MGAC;
It's master, Rincewind, is from Terry Pratchett's Discworld. He's a failed and utterly useless wizard and also a part-time assistant librarian at the Unseen University. His fantastically bad luck has a tendency to get him roped into dangerous journeys that've dragged him across the length of space and everywhere else. He's also very, very good at running away from anything and everything and thus is almost unnaturally adept at staying alive...

Yup, it's all modo other than the generation of the normal maps (still quite bitter that they did not include that function) which was done in Max.

How does Modo's modelling setup work compared to Max's? Much easier?

Compared to Max's, I find it much, much faster and easier. Very efficient and powerful toolset and an intuitive interface. I love it <3
As I mentioned, it's lacking the highpoly > low poly normal map generator, which is pretty annoying (it's easy enough to export the models and generate them with a third party, but it's still an interruption to the workflow). You also can't rig/animate in it yet, only model, texture and render stills.
Once it gets it's normal map generator, I shan't be looking back :)

These are looking great!
This is my WIP entry.. I've still got a LOT to do..
This familiar is an airwhale. He's transportation, guardian, and (if polys allow) shelter! It's modeled after a humpback whale (obviously missing his tail and pectoral fins at the moment). I'm working on blocking in the humpback shape, then I'll stylize it a bit more. I want to add an opposable thumb and one or two fingers to the pectoral fins. If polys allow, I'll add a shack to his back. I also plan on painting the whales head (much like the oliphants in LoTR) with arcane symbols. I'll either do a normal map (and add some basic geometry for the bumps on the nose) or see what I can model and make a transparency map for the baleen in his mouth.. I'm thinking I can probably just texture that though. Currently weighs in at 592 tris.

edit1:Are we allowed to use doublesided triangles? I have 4 triangles left for the wings at the moment, and that means the difference between using triangles and using squares for the wings.
edit2:Nevermind, I'm assuming we aren't, and it doesn't really matter for how I'm doing my wings :D

MGACs are a great way to practise your skills on something that you don't normally do. Really, the biggest difference I've found between organic and non-organic modelling is that with organic modelling you need concept art before you start modelling, whereas with non-organic you can just sort've add stuff willy-nilly.

Well, here's my entry thus far, I'll probably finish texture tonight. I'm using the transparency map for my selection, and this little guy is 660 tris w/o a scepter that he is holding for his master, which comes to be about 789 (I think).

Humphrey is a pet/familiar/magical experiment of Manos The All Powerful...jr. When Manos jr. turned ten, his father gave him several books of familiar summoning and explained that since he had a familiar at the age of ten, his son should have one too. Manos advised his son to read through the books and pick out something that he liked. Unfortunately for Humphrey, Manos jr. picked little bits here and there of all the coolest things he could think of ("It's gotta have a BIG OL' EYEBALL and wings and..."). Fortunately for Humphrey, Manos jr. doesn't mind Humphrey's looks seeing as how he's the only pet he's ever seen that can play fetch and throw the ball back.

and then i went through the scary/fun process of hacking him down to 800 tri. He's lost a lot of geometry... but i think we can still save him... LOL. The geometry on the 800 looks like a nightmare. well the higher tri doesnt look so good either, but all well. Im an illustrator. :)
Also put a little test texture around the eyes. I think its gona work out prity good. 796 for the low poly. Ill probably throw 4 tri in there somwhere. But its 2:30 in the morning, and i have work tomorrow. Curses to these challenges! :D

Final entry tomorrow. Story, Concept etc. Anyway, I really enjoyed this challenge. Great job coming up with the idea. Loving it. Dont be afraid to make more like this in the future :)
(edit: this was my first fully handpainted texture + using a webcam. Great learning experience.. Got some tips from my girlfriend on some parts of the texturing process as well). Shes a bit better at this than me :)

Vir Divinus, familiar to the Holy Magi of Mauvdera Desert sect, are small creatures conjured by the group in order to serve as both a able warrior and also as a symbollic pillar. Upon creation, the eyes are removed in order to avoid temptation of evils, and the angelic being forced to wear rings of thorns to give eternal cleasing. the average "lifespan" per say is limited, being about 1-2 years for a novice mage, and 5-8 for a Master of the conjuring arts.
HEIGHT: 2'9" - 3'4"
ALIGNMENT: GOOD
(p.s. , texture is completely hand painted, as well as I did the concept and everything on the model. pretty pleased with the texture seeing as though it's my first completely hand painted organic skin)

dang, am i too late? been too busy with work but tonite i had some time to work on this little guy.
This is the shadow iffrit of the great sorcerer Al Faroq. He is basically a assistant and a powerful funnel dark magics. While Al Faroq believes he is in charge, in reality this iffrit is only with his current master because he finds the sorcerer's lust for power amusing. Overall a malevolent little spirit that revels in mayhem.

few words about wizard :
This is the case where the master looks like his pet and pet like his master. Wizard has white long beard and hair, his eyes are blue. He isn't good or evil, his acts are like the stripes on the tiger, sometimes good and sometimes not. Tiger is his closest and only friend, and he doesnt regret it.
btw it's the first time i handpainted all the textures

FINAL ENTRY
Words on the challenge:
This was the second challenge i entered and the first one for my girlfriend. I did all the modeling, idea-forming and most of the texturing.
Got some help from my GF who is a much better texturer than me. She for example showed me a better way to do the fur. She also did the concept images and helped me some with the ideas. She also gave me a few lectures about cat legs etc.
Anyway, I really enjoyed this competition. Hope it shows in the work ive done! :)
Words on the creation:
Much can be said about Tikameeser but to be short i guess it would be something like this. The master wizard crafted a hat for his feline companion who usually sat or laid looking at his master while he studied. The hat was meant to improve the cats intelligence and make him able to speak.
It worked... to well. The lazy cat started to learn the wizards spells when he studied and soon even began to make some himself. Thankfully it wasnt for desctruction or for good...
No it was for a much higher purpose... For comfort!
The cat imbued a pipe with the power of neverending catnip and thats why its called Everpuff. It did have a minor negative side to it. Combined with the hat his eyes began to glow.
He made his favorite pillow levitate so he he didnt have to walk and the vest was simply for style. Any self consious cat would want a gold and silk vest.
On his tail is a magical charm which he controls the pillow with. Wave tail left = Pillow move left etc
The cat can usually be seen floating around the magic academy puffing on his pipe or eating some of the conjured food he has lying around. If he´s up for the mood he might give you some advice on your studies as well. (Especieally if you bribe him)
Notes of interest:
The name of the cat was "Hercules the wizards cat" at first and it was named and based on after my girlfriends siamese cat. Tikameeser was choosen because she often refers to siamese cats as "tikameesers".
The model was meant to look like the concept but limitations made it a bit hard to achieve. Im especially said because of the missing tassles. Im thinking of revisiting this design but in next gen style.
This was my first 100% handpainted texture and also my first texture i used a wacom for.

I'd have added the swirly glows to the eyes even though you wouldnt able to animate them its wouldnt have been noticable in the stills, actually you would have been able to animate them - some new games are using movies streaming for textures for things, really just tech demos but it is done.
Thing is. It didnt turn out that good or the way i wanted it with the glow map. At least not when i used it.
I would have preffered to put the smoke on a plane-surface and texture it using a glow, transp and colormap. This is why im thinking of going "next gen on its ass".
In retrospect i would probably have earned more by using a transp map instead of a glow but oh well.

hey congrats everyone! yeah i really liked oinks cat and the little chest with all the feet the best.
-KDX-: well i really thought ur cat was cute and very anime looking but my only crit would have been to make the inside of the ears a brighter color to help break up the grey and maybe more texture space for the runes that glowed around him since they were so big the runes ended up looking a bit pixelated. also a different color for the tip of the tail or the tips of the ears would have been cool as would maybe little paws textured on.
I like the idea of your cat. The legs were actually pretty cool even though they probably were used to lighten the polycount. The only thing i didnt like was the sailor moon vibes i was getting :)

cool, ya thats actually what I was goin for...and the legs were that shape for style purpose not poly count...if I were to rig it you would see they have enough polies to actually move correctly. =) maybe a wireframe was in order. Thanks tho, and again props to oink!
