This is a texture I did for a friend in trade for some animation work, that and to find a way to break my habit of making crap looking airplanes (tanks, vehicles, buildings, etc. were fine...but aircraft aways lacked somehow). I spent waaaay too much time on it (at least 16+ hours for the uvmapping and texturing) for its role in the mod...but in the end I think it was worth it.

flat texture (http://www.derelictstudios.net/users/smurf/temp/lancaster_uvmap.jpg)

wip_1 (http://www.derelictstudios.net/users/smurf/temp/lancaster_wip1.jpg)
wip_2 (http://www.derelictstudios.net/users/smurf/temp/lancaster_wip2.jpg)

The only complaints I have about it is the uvmap (I wish I had taken the time to split the wing in half for more effecient uvmap space) and that it does tend to look like the sun is shining REALLY brightly on it.

Note: No propellers on it yet, will be using the standard flat texture for those when its rigged.

Comments/Crits/Flames/etc. welcomed!

nice looking texture.

only painting crit would be the windows, very hard to get right (fake the seethrough), but i think theyre letting it down at the mo.

personally i think its better to keep things square, and not go diagonal unless your doing high res stuf, cos you can always get pixels too look better.

also i think you could reduce the size of the texures by half and get almost the same looking model (and i think it would be a better use of resources eg poly-texturespace).

oh the old lancaster bomber, the memories. i once modelled and textured the interior wireless navigation and radio station for a local company. much fun.

and this looks good, but the line along the length of the plane is at such a height that it lines up with one of the edges at the front of the plane, and give the body an overall boxy look in the 3/4 view.

Shepeiro, Yea you are right...the weak spot is the windows. I personally only really know two ways to fake it somewhat, either give it a lot of reflections (like on that) or to just downplay the windows severely (painting them very dark with some light highlights on top). Neither really seem to do the job all that well. Have any links to pictures of something similarly done? I'd love to learn how to do that properly.
