Hello,

this is my first post here in this forum, so hi all =). Iīd like you to take a look at an animation I recently completed. I tried to simulate the feeling of a handheld camera filming an object. Itīs not that exciting, but Iīm pretty pleased how it turned out. Itīs rendered in MAX4.2 with finalRender and postprocessed with After Effects. A screenshot is posted below the text, the file can found here:

DivX 5.01, 4.3 megs (http://www.tu-chemnitz.de/~jger/anim/handcam.avi)

The mesh of that ship was once a free give-away from DeEspona.

Iīm a bit nervous as I donīt know if it fits the standards here... So please be gentle

Thank you,

Joerg

 awesome... how long was the render on that?

Fwoah that is pretty convincing. It really did feel like a handheld cam effect. :applause:

that is really great, the only complaint i have is that the actual movement of the camera is too smooth, try making that pan n tilts more unstable. it's very hard to keep a smooth shot on an object when lifting it and tilting it at the same time.

I agree with Lazorwolf that a bit more random jerking and such is required when the camera is moved. Other than that, I am very impressed. Nice work!! Reminds me a lot of the superb animation on Pepeland and you should take that as a BIG compliment! :)

HI
well what can i say its a really good start.
i like the dof work but i don't think it has any real reason to be there usally the focus would be lost because of of the camera moving forwards or backwards not side to side. I think this is the weakest part of the animation and that the jerking could just use a little bit of work to make it slightly less sutle. I guess what I'm saying is that you could start further back from the object and move closer. usally someone with a handeheld cam tries to get the whole object to start with... maybe you could start at the same place but then as the make beleive person holding the camera realizes that they are to close zooms out or backs up ?
well thats all i have to say and I am being quite picky but why post if not for critique right?

Wow, so many nice comments! Thank you guys =)

Talos, that took about 70hrs (+/- a few, I canīt remember, I rendered over a few days with some breaks for quake3 :D). It could have been a bit faster as a friend pointed out later I should have used the texture baker feature of finalRender to save rendertime... Maybe next time :P

Aftahours and Laptop: Thank you, youīre too kind =)

Well, about the smoothness of the camera motion: I made another animation before this one and it was way smoother and I thought I corrected it with this new one. But I will keep that in mind =) The reason I made the anim was actually just a test to see if this technique will work when I do a new animation with a car a friend is currently modelling (wow, what a sentence...).

Zastrozzi: Your hints and tips are more than welcome, I will use them when I do the new animation. I noticed the missing zoom-in/out when I finished the rendering, but I just didnīt have the patience to render it again (70hrs... you know). The point why I used a DoF-effect was mainly to give the impressing of a small ship model, this DoF creates the impression itīs a small object ;)

Thank you again all =)

Hey Joerg,
I am a fan of this animation. Looks very realistic and the jiggle motion of the camera really adds to the home camera feel.

HUT AB!

This looks awesome! This exactly looks like my motherīs video skills!!! Is it Hi8 ? ;) The coolest thing Iīve seen for a long time.
Except the smooth movement of the camcorder, but others mentioned this before.

Please up the animation with your friendīs car too!!!!

very good work with that. Not only do most of the motions look realistic, but the model looks realistic.

The only thing I would have to say is that most handheld cameras don't have such a small focus range. I have a small DV camera that I just tried out simaler motions on a little model ship and it dosn't go that crazy with the focus.

Another note on focus...even when the ship went completely out of focus the background remained fuzzy. I'm guessing that is because the backdrop was a HDRI image.

I like the motion. How about a nice tutorial? :)

Thanx guys =)

RiotManZ: haha, thanx man =). Iīd love to render a new animation with the car, but this lazy sucker is too slow to finish it :D no no, j/k, heīs working like crazy, but it takes itīs time.

Stephen: I donīt have a camera, not even a standard photo cam so I could not test how the focal range is or is not. But I thank you for the hints, they will come in handy when I do something similar. Maybe I should ask my grandpa for his cam :P

shivan: A tutorial? Well, there isnīt much to explain. Basically I moved the camera around a bit and edited the motion keys in TrackView to vary the speed of the movement at least a little bit. The shaking is done via 2 noise controllers (again in TrackView) on the camera target. Apply a list controller to the target and youīll get 2 empty slots for other controllers. The first slot was occupied by a noise controller with a small and subtle constant shaking with a low frequency and the second slot has a noise controller with a low frequency but larger noise sizes (to get a stronger shaking). Those noise sizes are animated again to get those stronger shakes not all over the complete animation time. Youīll notice them when that camera cap gets removed and when the camera moves down a bit.

I hope that explains a little bit, thank you again, Iīm feeling better now ;)

i first looked at it without even reading your post. I was like what the hell... he shot this with his damn camera and trying to see if it's good? the camera and stuff sucked with the noise in the back ground.. I read your post and went.. WOW!!!!!
:bounce: Nice work! nice nice nice!

you have done a really nice work on the camera movement, can you tell me how you did it to achieve that look?? Cause I am doing something like that with one of my shots, and would like your input , thank you

Your technique has great potential. I think you should start working on the next "Alien Autopsy". I'd be a believer!

Nice work

I thought it was real at first, thinking it would show the animation. Good job!

He used an Adobe After Effects plugin.

I'm guessing something from DigiEffects, like CineMotion.

(edit: IGNORE THE BAD LIP-SYNC, it was done in 8 minutes.)

Matt,

thank you for the link, but the movement was done completey in Max. I used AE for the video distortions, that overbright light at the start and the sound-adding only.

I will make a preview-anim later this day when Iīm back home and post here. =)

Ok, here is the viewport-preview, please excuse the bad compression, I have to save a little webspace lately ;).
Also a screenshot of the trackview and the camera path can be seen =)
