Hey first time in a Challenge for a while!

My Character is kinda odd thank goodness ;)

Species:

Geaprind ‘o lencten or roughly the deceitful crust of spring. The particular beast is known as Moddaeis . They are known to come out during Spring just as the leaves start to come out, hiding him.

The decietful beast lurks just along the truck of large tree and with a small thumb dangles the newest buds fomr the tops of the trees to small animals. It slowly lets it tail out flips it back to launch itself quickly up the trees.

After Spring it quickly disapears into the tops of the massive trees in the thickest of the Fangorn forest.

I can't see any pics

[edit]

Oh now I can!

Looking interesting, although admittedly it's a bit difficult trying to figure out what they are...
Perhaps some explanations? :)

It's about as close to a shrimp in the forest as you can get - I've updated the links so hopefully they'll be a bit faster!

It uses the claws to hang from trees and hide until prey comes. The tail is used on the ground for stability, and in the air for momentum shifts, and the claws can be seen to be blunted by agressive moving along the ground.

I'll try to make it more clear in the future sorry! Thnaks a bunch for looking, Modeling will of course start ASAP!

Aaaah right, now I can see what it is... I'm surprised I couldn't really make it out before... perhaps I had something in my eye

Cool idea! Definitely very unsual and original! Looking forward to seeing the model
Perhaps he can be like Zoidberg in Futurama :D

and slightly more clear from the back. There will be some swimmer things under the tail, so for now there's a comfusing mass of intersecting geometry!

Wow man, you model like how it is build. :insane: (wird sentence) I thought about those red things that they are crispy. Your model looks like it right now, it's so cool.

Hey thanks 3ddy - yeah there was a bunch of reference used - so hopefully it'll look realistic (somewhat ;)) but not too derived . . .

Just a suggestion but wouldn't it be wiser to model this guy straight out instead of curled up....unless you've already rigged this guy....it would make animating a bit easier...of course I use lightwave and it may differ from your prog of choice....looks great though....nicely done...keep it up:thumbsup:

I suppose, He'll probably be in this position most of the time, but yeah it might be ;)

I won't really be using any advanced rig- just simple FK since each ring is a separate object .

Actually I'll try that tommorow - see if I've dug a hole for myself!!

Thanks for the replies,

Rock on!! I love insectoid creatures!!

l_farley13_l
01-21-2003, 04:19 PM
Hey thanks Mentat7 !

It occures to me that perhaps this guy needs some humanizing [word?] to fit intot he LOTR universe, most of the good baddy's have some kind of human touch (thinking mostly about the troll - the balrog was other worldly but has a human like face structure) So any advice in this area would be VERY helpfull!!

I had always planned to give him pupil-ed
eys but I think I may need to go further!

Small update to the head- topology and and an eye - yeah he kinda needed that! Still strying to think of any humanizing aspects I cano give him to bring him to life!

I'll post some detail driven concepts - in the meantime, does anyone know what I'm talking about ;) I have a history of being unlcear!

azazel

I like pupiled eyes idea... maybe not enough to look human;), but still nice. A lot will depend of textures, You could make him more human-like skin or insect carapace for example. Also some facial expressions may be useful. Insects generally can't change expression of their faces... Making his face of some soft tissue and muscles may allow some expressions, maybe not exactly human-like, but little step closer I think.

l_farley13_l
01-24-2003, 05:41 AM
Yeah that sounds good ! I think I'm going to split the head into a boney armor part on top and a softer skin version underneith - with the division like this

http://www.contrib.andrew.cmu.edu/~afarley/WIP11.jpg
Thank you very much for the response azaze ! I'm going to definitely do those detail sketches tommrow with expression in mind!

Very freaky looking creature!

You should post one up with some standard bright lighting so we can get a better look at the details!

Some of the Rigging: I've added those swimmie things, but their more like claws for the forest. He can get grip to a certain degree. Unwrap Animation (445 k) (http://www.contrib.andrew.cmu.edu/~afarley/preview.avi)

azazel - your Swimming guy is coming out great!
Neox - yours has a good lot of charm! Very personable ;)
somlor - Keep going! He's starting to look really nice!
Got started on the Texturing. It's coming along, not really happy with the speculars or the general feel for the skin.
