In xsi it seems you can have overlapping edges that share the same 2 vertices to create the edge. What if you don't want this?

For example.. Make a cube and grid. merge the cube and grid. then try welding edges and then smoothing the object. You get a hole where overlapping edges occur.

In maya you can't have overlapping edges that share the same 2 vertices trying to create it results in a unified edge. (at least it seems that way)

nonmanifold geometry?

If you select the overlapping points, does it show 2 points? Try selecting all those points that are on top of each other and Modify/Polymesh/FilterPoints.

Yeah two points.

Heres a file.

I don't think you could weld the edge in this case, it will create non-manifold polygon.

It can share same vertices, but it will not be merge edge, the edge from the grid still treated as boundary edge.

I guess maya subds can still do stuff that xsi's can't.

SDS routines are basically the same across all packages. The problem here is not the SDS but the bad geometry. The solution is to not make geometry like this.
