Hi all,

Although I am a new poster, I have been reading for years. It occured to me in my recent search for others using this software and not finding anything, that the one place with enough visual effects experts that would have some Elastic Reality users would be here.

So, hopefully this forum is the closest to what I am looking for to find such people.

Anyway, I have recently got into using my (licensed but ancient) copy of Elastic Reality 3 again due to a recent project and I am remebering why I used to love it so much. I would like to exchange tips and tricks with seasoned ER users as I have recently been attempting to use it in conjunction with other apps and coming up with some very interesting effects. I do have a few advanced questions though.

Anyone here have any experience with it?

thanks! :)

Sami

yeah
i never understood why avid stopped selling it...
Did you know that the er developpers are founders of www.silhouettefx.com ?
It's not a morphing software (it's a very efficient track/roto/paint tool) but it has some good ideas coming from er.

yeah me neither, guess it got swallowed up by Avid and then abandoned as I gather? or incorporated as part of a bigger product as a feature which editors would mostly ignore or not use - which all is just as good as abandoning it I guess.

I've been using it since its 16bit version in Win 3.11 but now have ver 3 and dust off my copy every now and then for some cool effects.

I'm doing a pretty basic moving morph from A-roll to B-roll, and I understand groups and all, but I am trying to get a certain morph shape to pass over top of the other shapes without causing tearing. Basically there is a strand of hair on the second B-roll face which covers a bit of the chin and its source is a strand which does not in the first A-roll face. I'm using user-joined shapes and have groups for layering and am using the graph editor to change when certain features change, but I'm experiencing some tearing as the strand of hair crosses the chin. I thought Jigsaw mode would be best... I'm not quite sure how to separate the strand grouping so that it doesn't tear. I have "allow crossing-shapes" on too.

Any ideas? I'd rather do this all in one-pass - i've read the manual on folding shapes underneath others but I can't seem to avoid the chin/neck area to not tear when the strand crosses it... This is probably a slightly advanced usage of ER but something I should know - hence the question here.

And thanks for the heads up on the developers new projects! :) I'll certainly check it out!

ER is now part of DS Nitris. It's code is also used as the general warp tool so I use it often.

The morpher/warper in Shake is much nicer and more powerful then ER. It works pretty much the same, just allows more shape control. At $499 now, it is hard to beat.

Really? Shake has tools that work similar and are more powerful than ER?? What the heck am I waiting for. My bad for using AE for that sort of thing - I will check it out for future work - so thanks for the heads up. But I still have this project started in ER and would like to finish it before I shelve ER again... :) So anyone with ER knowledge still please do post :-)

I'm pretty green on the Mac side of things though, I was going to wait for 2nd gen Mac Intels before dabbling and adding one to our studio. Is there a standalone version that doesn't require FCP? It was hard to tell on apple's site...

Ok since I'm having no joy and no one's really posted about how I might solve this, I figure I might be a little more visually articulate and show what the problem is in the hopes that someone might be able to point me in the right direction with ER to solve this. I know I could do this in multiple passes and compositing, but I'd really like to know how to solve this which is a pretty standard ER thing (i.e. folding of crossing shapes).

Please see the issues in the attached images below..

Any help would be massively appreciated. Thanks!! :)

P.S. The output shown is at the 50% mark for the morph btw. Also this is a totally separate from scratch stripped down still morph (as opposed to my original more complex moving morph) just to illustrate the problem I am experiencing...

Shake will run on any mac hardware that supprts os 10.4. For some reaseon Apple has given people the impression that Shake is some sort of plug-in for FCP !?!?! This is SOOOOOOOOO no the case. $499 US standalone with unlimited render licences. The Warper/morpher in Shake is very good and fast too !

It looks like the problem you are having is by trying to warp the hair along with the facial elements. I would suggest doing the hair as a seperate layer and comping back over the top and just repairing the sections it doesn't mask.
