View Full Version : bezier>spline patch
hey everyone... im trying to model this chair (http://www.hypnoticmedia.co.uk/imgsrc/wip/royalbucks/sofa.jpg) but finding it a little tricky.
here's the base cushion (http://www.hypnoticmedia.co.uk/imgsrc/wip/royalbucks/cushion.jpg) ive worked on so far just to see if i can get it started right.
...but as you can see the fronts a little messed with the spline patch and i just wondered if this is the best way to do it? also the fabric i have to texture it (rather than leather) is very small... should i just reproduce that in photoshop with a seperate texture for each main side of the cushion etc?¿?
thanks

is this the same spline post I'm trying to help you in other thread?. well, anyway...mm.. Iwouldn't say this is the best method, are you using Max?, if you are, I think that the best way of doing that it's using Box Modeling and the MeshSmooth modifier, it's really fast and you could finish modeling that in an hour more or less.
TUTORIAL of BoxModeling:

haha, erm sorry no its a completely different model. but i thought this would be the best way to give it a smooth fabric kinda feel. thanks a lot for the link, ill check it out now.
actually using lightwave 7.5 so ill have to see how i can do that there, the other way i thought it would be good could be box modelling and lots of bandsaw? but i dont really understand that tool so well
thanks a lot tho, any tips¿

Of course!, you have quite a powerful tool in Lightwave that it's a bit like MeshSmooth in Max... here you have another tut, but for lightwave.

hope it helps.
hey thanks again... are you running max by the way?

Yep!, in the office we use Max, but I'm playing around with Lightwave and Maya educational version at home, I haven't decided witch one I'm gonna use finally ( probably not maya, not cheap at all :p ).
ok... started over, this is where im up to
chair one (http://www.hypnoticmedia.co.uk/imgsrc/wip/royalbucks/chair.jpg)

alright... well tried to set some texture to it, its got a cubic projectoin image map thats mirrored at quite a high dimension @72dpi... also theres another map, exactly the same but greyscale in the bump ( as the first is in the color)

ok, mmmm, much better now, but... you shouldn't jump to the texturing process before finishing the modeling process, 'cos if you change your mind about the mesh you'll have to rebuild the texture afterwards..... anyway, it looks good, but if you want it to look more realistic, you should add a few more faces in between to make some bumps and irregularities in the surface, and then go for the texturing.
I mean, it's just my opinion, there's plenty of that out there.. :p
well yea i see what your saying... totally agree, just eager to not have a huge obsticle like texturing blocking my thought while im modelling. like, half way through im just-do i know what to do next?-and not entirely, so its nice to have a clearer thought and make some tests... anyway, ill play with the mesh a little but im confused. how should i texture it? face by face? tile? no matter how i save a tile it always looks 'funky'
:scream:
anyway, thanks for the feedback... any more input¿
thanks again

Maybe you should check this other tutorial about texture mapping in lightwave, it's quite clear about what method it's the best for every subject.
