There is no "best" software, but the ones i would recommend for windows is Fusion 5, which is excellent, and Nuke, though Nuke seems to be more geared torwards VFX films from what i've heard. They are both priced aroudn the same price which is 5k. As for Shake, the last version for Windows was 2.5 and it has since been discontinued, though, they just lowered the price for the Mac version to $500, so if you're very familiar with Shake you can buy a mac and a Shake license, which has unlimited render nodes for OS X.

You can get the learning edition of Fusion 5 along with a ton of video tutorials and reference here:

http://www.eyeonline.com/Web/EyeonWeb/Products/registerdemo.aspx

Read the article and the release info and you will see the learning edition is almost the same as the 5k version except you get a water mark on your stuff and you can't use 3rd party plug-ins. So if your a student its quite alright, however if you want to use it for commercial... well, better fork over 5k. But you can at least use it to decide if you want to buy it or not.

Here is a direct link to the tutorials/extra media i found on the eyeonline.com website after downloading the learning edition.

You can also just do a search in google. Possibly try vfxtalk.com or there might be something here leading you to tutorials. Hope it helps!

Cheers!

I'd say either check out Fusion or Shake 4.1. The new version of Shake is only $499 (I think even less if you're a student) and is universal, so it should work on PC's now.

Universal means that it will run on intel mac's. It will only run under osX

Crap. I thought it looked too good to be true  Oh well. Regardless Shake is still a real good program. Thanks for the clarification.

I would recommend Fusion over AE, for compositing.

Oh right.. but I see most people in cgtalk are only posting in the AE forums and in Fusion forums their isnt much of a thread/s. So you all think that fusion could be better then ae right? just wanna have some opinions before I try it lol.

AE is a decent app, but it doesnt even come close to Fusion in any way :) (then again, it is 5 times more expensive)
