Maxwell is a physically based renderer. It will take a long time no matter what. As for tutorials, I would check the official Maxwell forums.

seedo,
Sadly, Maxwell's power can only be truly harnessed at the expense of time.
In a nutshell, instead of calculating light patterns as RGB values, Maxwell uses physics and processes the behavior of light as electromagnetic pulses.
As for it taking a really long time to render when there's nothing in your scene...you have nothing in your scene to tell you when the render's done, so in theory it's NEVER done.
If you want some good references, go to the Maxwell Render forums.
